Senior lineman can't wait for Friday night's homecoming game with Fort Gibson Tigers

October 4, 2012

Last year, the Poteau Pirates football team suffered a heartbreaking 59-56 shootout loss on the road against the Fort Gibson Tigers. That taste of defeat did not sit well with current senior lineman Trevor Shankle.

Poteau freshmen have no problems with Vian; PKMS teams split with visitors

October 4, 2012

The Poteau Pirates freshmen football team had its stiffest test, or so it was appearing to be, Tuesday night at Costner Stadium when the Vian Wolverines came to town. While the Wolverines were trying to hand this bunch their first-ever loss, the Pirates had other ideas.
Even with freshman, and current varsity, running back Roger Barcheers in street clothes on the sideline, the Pirates did not miss a beat as they routed the Wolverines 41-6.

Arkoma Mustangs in football playoff mode now, welcome Midway Chargers for homecoming

October 4, 2012

Although the high school football playoffs will not start until Nov. 9, for all intents and purposes they have now started for the Arkoma Mustangs (1-4, 1-3 in District C-4).
“The playoffs have started for us,” said Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach. “We need to win or we're probably done.”
The Mustangs lost their third straight district game last Friday night at Mustang Field, falling 53-8 to Southwest Covenant.

Heavener football team looks to bounce back with home win over Checotah Friday night

October 4, 2012

The Heavener Wolves football team was in perhaps the best game from a fan's perspective so far this season. The Wolves ended up being in a shootout last Friday night on the road against the Roland Rangers, who ended up prevailing 40-32.
“Offensively, we played pretty well,” said Carl Lee, Heavener's first-year coach. “Defensively, we struggled a bit at times in our secondary. From a fan's standpoint, it was an pretty exciting game. From a coach's standpoint, it was a game in which I was trying to not get a heart attack.”

Panama Razorbacks like chances to get first win of 2012 football season Friday night at Antlers

October 4, 2012

If ever there was a golden opportunity to get a victory during this 2012 football season, Friday night may be the night for the Panama Razorbacks.
The Hogs (0-5, 0-2 in District 2A-6) will travel to meet the Antlers Bearcats (0-5, 0-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“We don't want to overlook things, but we like our chances as compared to other weeks,” said Brandon Ellis, Panama's second-year coach. “It's a winnable game for us, if we do things right.”

Deer season is here, and I drew first blood this time

October 4, 2012

It took two hunts and three shots, but I drew first blood on the second day of archery season. The deer was not a trophy one, but it was to me because I took it with a bow.
On day one, Dan Carter and I headed out to our little hunting spot in the evening time to try out luck. Dan bowhunts out of a lawn chair, and he always sees and shoots at deer which is amazing to me. He had an encounter with a fawn on the first evening just before dark but did not get a shot off after a-10-minute standoff due to lack of daylight.

Poteau senior softball players want different end to season than in 2011

October 3, 2012

In the 2011 fast-pitch softball season, the Poteau Lady Pirates were the host team for a Class 4A Regional Tournament. They ended up losing in the championship round to see their season end. For almost a year, that feeling has not been forgotten by the Lady Pirates.
“It gave us drive and want-to to not have it end like it did last year,” senior right fielder Gabba Wilson said. “We had run ruled them, then they beat us (in the regional title game) and that upset us. We're determined that it's not going to happen this year.”
