Bokoshe Tigers begin District C-4 play tonight, welcome Bowlegs Bison to town

September 12, 2014

The Bokoshe Tigers football team is essentially starting the season at 0-0, despite losing 46-0 in their home opener last week to county rival Arkoma in a game ended at the 9:54 mark of the third quarter due to the 45-point mercy rule.
The Tigers (0-1) will begin District C-4 play tonight as they entertain the Bowlegs Bison at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
Despite the rough start to the season, the players have been very upbeat as they prepared for the Bison.

Spiro welcomes Muldrow for battle of Bulldogs in tonight’s home opener

September 12, 2014

The good news for the Spiro Bulldogs was they won last week’s football season opener 47-40 over Stilwell.
However, the not-as-good news for the ’Dogs that night was they had to hold on for dear life to get that victory, scoring a touchdown in the final period and keeping Stilwell out of the end zone on four plays inside the Spiro 10.
“We’re proud of the fact that we won, but there are a lot of things that we’re not satisfied with,” Spiro coach Chris Bunch said. “There was a reason we were in the position we were in. We’ve got to get those things corrected.”

Heavener Wolves ready for challenge of Vian Wolverines; tonight’s game moved to Vian due to Harvey Stadium track construction

There’s nothing like a strong finish, the Heavener Wolves football team had just that in its season opener last Friday night at Atoka.
Trailing 14-12, the Wolves scored the final 20 points of the game en route to a 32-14 win over the homestanding Wampus Cats.

Senior receiver/defensive back says Pirates will bounce back; game time vs. Van Buren, Ark., moved up to 7 p.m. Friday

September 11, 2014

The Poteau Pirates, last season’s Class 4A state runners-up, did not get to start the 2014 season as they would have liked, losing to the Alma [Ark.] Airedales in last Thursday night’s Hooten’s Classic game at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School.
However, Poteau senior wide receiver/defensive back Dayton Martinez has no doubt the Pirates will bounce back.
“It was very frustrating,” Martinez said about the Alma loss. “I think we can do a lot better than that. With all the practice we’ve been doing, it’s helped. I think we’ll come back.”

Pocola Indians face Poteau JV tonight

September 11, 2014

The Pocola Indians football team will look to rebound from it’s season-opening loss Friday night against Sallisaw-Central as the Indians will meet the Poteau Pirates junior varsity at 7 tonight at Costner Stadium.
Pocola coach Rick Lang said there were a lot of factors that led to the Indians’ 48-22 loss to the Tigers.
“First off, Central is a good ball club, and they beat us in all three phases of the game,” he said. “It was an eye-opener for our kids, but we had a good practice on Saturday and [Monday]. I’m glad they hit us in the mouth.”
