When anyone enters the Poteau Pirates football team's locker room, on the wall are several team goals. No. 8 — Beat Sallisaw. No. 9 — Go undefeated at home. If the Pirates achieve goal No. 9 tonight at Costner Stadium, it means the Pirates also achieved goal No. 8.
The Pirates (3-0) will welcome the archrival Black Diamonds (2-1) to town to open District 4A-4 play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Costner Stadium.
“It's nice to be home,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's new coach. “It's going to be special because this will probably be the largest crowd these players are going to play in front of.”
For professional wrestling fans, grappler Bill Goldberg always said, “Who's next?” as he was keeping a undefeated streak intact. If the Vian Wolverines football team and their fans ask that question, the answer is the Pocola Indians.
The Indians and Class 2A's top-ranked Wolverines will open District 2A-6 play at 7:30 p.m. tonight at John Carter Field.
Ches Brown of Bokoshe was the Week 3 winner of The Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks contest.
Brown successfully picked 10 of the 12 games, and was actually tied with a 10-2 record with other pickers.
However, Brown won the tiebreaker as he was closest to picking the final score of the Tulsa Webster-Poteau game from last week, which was won by the Pirates 21-0. Since Brown's prediction was closest to the actual final score, Brown got the nod as the winner and earned $25.
Entries for this week's contest must be in by 5 p.m. this afternoon.
Our Poteau Bandit League's fourth-grade team was in an exciting game Saturday in Greenwood, Ark. The Pirates scored on the opening drive, which was capped by Cole Hensley's 10-yard touchdown run. Colton Williamson's conversion was good, but was called back due to a holding penalty, so Poteau stayed ahead 6-0.
Two Greenwood possessions later, the host team scored and made its PAT to take an 8-6 lead. By the way, kicking an extra point is worth two points in Bandit League play.
For quite some time, Sept. 21, 2012, is a date which Poteau Pirate football players, coaches and fans have had etched in stone. Not only is it the District 4A-4 opener, but it is against archrival Sallisaw at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. One such individual is senior center/defensive lineman Logan Hildebrand.
“We're just ready to play,” he said. “We've been ready since summer. We believe that it's our time.”
PANAMA — Archrivals met Tuesday night to decide who would win the 2012 Class 2A Fast-Pitch Softball District Tournament when the defending state champion Panama Lady Razorbacks entertained the Pocola Lady Indians. In the end, it was the defending champs who prevailed as Panama swept Pocola by identical scores of 5-1.
The Lady ’Backs will find out early next week who they will play, where and when in the Class 2A Regional Tournament. The defeats ended Pocola's season.
WISTER — It looked like there was going to be a winner-take-all game Wednesday afternoon in the Class 2A District Tournament. After the homestanding Wister Lady Wildcats handled the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 8-2 in Tuesday's opening game, Talihina jumped out to a lead in the nightcap, which looked somewhat of a safe lead.
ARKOMA — The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets softball team finds itself this morning just a win away from another week of the season. The Lady ’Jackets posted wins over Gans (20-2) and host Arkoma (7-3) Tuesday at the Class A District Tournament.
The Lady Grizzlies were the first team to be eliminated as they suffered an 11-3 loss to the Lady Mustangs before losing to the Lady Yellowjackets.
The Lady ’Jackets and the Lady Mustangs will battle at 2 p.m. this afternoon in the title game of the district tournament. If Arkoma prevails, there will be a winner-take-all game right afterward at 3:30 p.m.
