Monday's High School Boys Basketball Roundup

WILBURTON — After only scoring a free throw in the final period, the Pocola Indians bounced back in overtime to down the Wilburton Diggers 46-43 Monday night.
Panola 72, Whitesboro 64: In Whitesboro, the Bulldogs (4-9) led 17-10 after one period, but the Bearcats took advantage of Whitesboro's foul trouble and outscored the ’Dogs 62-47 over the final three quarters — thanks in part to shooting 43 free throws in the game.
McCurtain 74, Bokoshe 23: In McCurtain, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-2 lead after one period and never looked back.

Local horse owner wins award

Poteau horse owner Danny Caldwell shared the 2011 Ran Ricks Award at Remington Park.
Caldwell shared the award with Black Hawk Stable of Elk City as each finished the season with 18 victories.
Caldwell won his third owning title while Black Hawk Stable won for the first time. The Ricks Award is named after the late owner and breeder who passed in 1996 after years of working to bring pari-mutuel racing to Oklahoma. Ricks won a total of seven owner championships at his home track of Remington Park.

ESPN needs to quit being the one dictating college sports scene

I am getting fed up with ESPN dictating the course of sports, and even altering sports events.
To all my Oklahoma Sooner brethren, let me assure you that I'm still in the same as I have always been.
But to our brothers at Oklahoma State, let me see how I can say this simply. The Cowboys got shafted on both the omission from the Bowl Championship Series Championship Game and the absence of quarterback Brandon Weedon from the Heisman Trophy Presentation.

One last busy week of hoops before Christmas

If you want to see a lot of the LeFlore County high school basketball teams in action before Christmas Break, this will be your last week to do so.
After this week, things will be pretty limited on the hardwood until after the calendar has hit 2012.
Below is the slate of games for the rest of this week. One tournament is taking place this week as the Howe teams and the Poteau High School junior varsity teams are playing in the Wilburton Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Vikings, Lady Vikings end first semester with losses to Paris, Texas

Behind a 42-26 second half, the Paris (Texas) Junior College Dragons won 71-58 over the Carl Albert State College Vikings Saturday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Despite having three players scoring in double figures, the Lady Vikings lost 75-57 to the 18th-ranked Paris Lady Dragons in the first game on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings will open the second half of their 2011-12 season at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 against West Plains, Mo., then will play Whiteman (Mo.) Air Force Base at 5 p.m. Jan. 7 in the New Years Classic in West Plains, Mo.

Poteau teams finish H.B. Classic with losses to Ozark, Greenwood; Lady Pirate center makes All-Tournament Team

GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Poteau High School basketball teams had rough finishes to their action at the H.B. Stewart Classic. The Pirates lost 45-36 to Ozark, Ark., on Saturday after losing 54-45 Friday to host Greenwood.
The Lady Pirates suffered also ended with a pair of losses in the Classic, losing 55-40 to Ozark and 68-35 to Greenwood.
Poteau Lady Pirates center Colleen Peterson was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Talihina girls beat Antlers to win Choctaw Nation Tournament

TALIHINA — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers capped this past week's trio of games in the Choctaw Nation Tournament by winning the title game 41-26 over the Antlers Lady Bearcats Saturday night at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
The Lady Golden Tigers (4-0) got to the title game by winning Friday night's semifinal game 25-18 over Rattan, which ended up losing the third-place game Saturday night 51-13 to Sallisaw-Central.

Cameron boys beat Leflore in OT to win EOSC Blue Tournament title; Bokoshe girls claim championship in Blue Tournament

WILBURTON — Two LeFlore County high school basketball teams won championships in the Eastern Oklahoma State College Tournament on Saturday.
In the Blue Tournament, the Cameron Yellowjackets and the Bokoshe Lady Tigers brought home the gold. The ’Jackets beat the Leflore Savages 48-43 in overtime, while the Lady Tigers defeated the Panola Lady Bearcats 36-33 — also in OT — Saturday night at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.
One other team, the Whitesboro Bulldogs, lost the Gold Tournament title game 70-48 to the Red Oak Eagles.

Panama girls win third place at Greenleaf Tournament, but boys lose third-place game

PORUM — The Panama High School basketball teams split their third-place games in the Greenleaf Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Razorbacks defeated Braggs 45-40 in overtime after losing 38-27 in Friday's championship semifinals against Oaks.
The Razorbacks suffered a third-place game loss to Kinta as the Eagles prevailed 55-34. In Friday's championship semifinals, the Hogs lost 49-22 to Gore.
