Poteau wrestlers begin season today in road dual against Van Buren, Ark.

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team will begin its season in a road dual at 5:30 p.m. today against the Van Buren [Ark.] Pointers.
“I’m ready for it,” Poteau coach Jack Hornbuckle said. “Practices are a real necessity, but everybody lives for competition.”
The Pirates were 9-9 in duals last season, and they return six wrestlers who saw a lot of varsity action in that campaign.

CASC men rout Bacone JV

Getting a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds from Emmanuel Audu and solid defense in the second half proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Vikings as they picked up the season sweep of the Bacone College Junior Varsity Warriors with a 98-66 win Tuesday night in Muskogee.
The next games for the CASC teams will be Jan. 6 on the road against Coffeyville [Kan.] Community College. The women will play at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Pictures for Spiro Youth Basketball will be taken from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and next Thursday as well as 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 19 in the Spiro High School safe room, depending on the teams' weekly practice night.
Teams will need to arrive approximately 30 to 45 minutes ahead of their normal practice time.

Whitesboro teams sweep Panola

PANOLA — The Whitesboro High School basketball teams had little problems in sweeping a pair of games from the homestanding Panola squads Tuesday night. The Lady Bulldogs routed the Lady Bearcats 69-4, while the ’Dogs followed suit with a 67-25 victory over the ’Cats.

Leflore teams split road games against Haileyville on Tuesday

HAILEYVILLE — The Leflore High School basketball teams split their road games Tuesday night against the homestanding Haileyville squads.
The Lady Savages prevailed 67-29, but the Savages struggled with cold shooting as they fell 40-33 to the Warriors.

Talihina girls begin new basketball season with new coach; Golden Tigers waiting until next week to begin season

The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers will begin their basketball season with an 11 a.m. contest today against the Sallisaw-Central Lady Tigers in an opening-round game of the 2014 Choctaw Nation Invitational Tournament on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
The Golden Tigers, who saw their football season end in the Class A state semifinals last weekend for the second straight season, will wait until next week to begin their season. The Talihina JV will take the varsity's spot in this week's tournament, facing Kingston in today's opening-round game.

Arkoma, Cameron, Howe, Wister boys pick up Green Valley Conference Tournament opening-round victories

The Arkoma Mustangs, the host Cameron Yellowjackets, the Howe Lions and the Wister Wildcats were opening-round victors in Tuesday’s action in the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament at the Cameron Gym.
The Mustangs defeated the Keota Lions 67-65, while the ’Jackets stung the Bokoshe Tigers 77-46. The Mustangs and the Yellowjackets will meet in the championship semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday with the winner advancing to Saturday night’s 8:50 p.m. title game. The loser will play for third place at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Spiro basketball teams seek return trips to Class 3A State Tournament; Lady Bulldogs, ’Dogs open season in Wilburton Tournament

The Spiro High School basketball teams finished last season at the Class 3A State Tournament, only to have quick exits — as the Lady Bulldogs lost to Washington in the quarterfinals, while on the same night the ’Dogs fell to Verdigris.
Both Spiro teams, who begin their seasons Thursday at the Wilburton Tournament, will try to get back there once more.
The Lady Bulldogs, who were 21-7 last season, will meet the Hartshorne Lady Miners at 7 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
The ’Dogs, who were 24-3 last season, will meet Stigler at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
