Poteau hangs tough with Alma in Hooten’s Classic

Although the Poteau Pirates football team held its own against Arkansas’ Class 6A Alma Airedales, it was one key thing which coach Greg Werner was fearful of which helped put the Pirates in an early hole in the 2014 season opener in the Hooten’s Classic on Thursday night at Mayo-Thompson Stadium at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School. That was a slow start.
The Pirates fell 28-0 to the Airedales.

Panama boys handle Gore to open season

The 2014 season got started in fine fashion for the Panama Razorbacks on Thursday night at Panama’s George Ollie Stadium as they handled the Gore Pirates 34-6.
With the game tied at 6 after a period, the Razorbacks scored 15 unanswered points in the second period to end up with a 21-6 halftime lead.

Talihina football team routs Wilburton

WILBURTON — The Talihina Golden Tigers football team got 2014 started in the right direction with a 62-13 rout of the Wilburton Diggers on Thursday night.
Quarterback Alan Lockhart was involved in five of the seven first-half touchdowns for the Golden Tigers, three of them in the opening quarter.

LEFLORE — The combination of David Morris and Travis White threw a no-hitter as the Leflore Savages routed the Panola Bearcats 11-0 in the final game of Tuesday’s three-way. The Savages opened the day with an 8-2 win over the McCurtain Bulldogs.
In the win over Panola, Morris pitched the first three innings with seven strikeouts, while Travis White pitched the final inning with a strikeout.
In the victory over McCurtain, the Savages broke a scoreless tie with a three-run second inning for a 3-0 lead, which was never relinquished.

WHITESBORO — The duo of Shania McKosky and Lexey Branscum combined to no-hit the Panola Lady Bearcats 16-0 Tuesday afternoon.
McKosky, who got her first win of the season, pitched the first and last inning of Tuesday’s three-inning, run-rule contest, striking out five hitters and allowing no hits. Branscum, who was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, pitched the second inning, fanning three batters and keeping the Lady Bearcats hitless.
Heavener 15, Stigler 1: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves broke the game open with a five-run opening inning.

Poteau cross country runners participate in Tulsa University Hurricane Festival

TULSA — The Poteau High School cross country runners participated in the Tulsa University Hurricane Festival on Saturday at the Tulsa Zoo.
The race was broken down into classifications, seniors down to freshmen.
Three Lady Pirates were in the senior division, with Sheridan Hoyer medaling as she was ninth (6:22) on the one-mile course. Melanie Johnson was 32nd (8:24) and Taryn Shelton was 37th (9:30).
In the junior division, Kandace Standridge was runner-up (5:59) to be another Poteau medalist. Kenzi Brown was 17th (7:06), Iris Ocampo was 20th (7:22) and Taylor Darneal was 24th (7:26).

The 2014 football season is finally here for the Poteau Pirates, who will begin the latest gridiron campaign at 7:45 p.m. Thursday against the Alma [Ark.] Airedales in the Hooten’s Classic at Mayo-Thompson Stadium at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School. Two other Arkansas schools, Shiloh Christian and Charleston, will play at 5:30 p.m.
“We’re all tired of practicing,” Poteau third-year coach Greg Werner said. “We’re ready to play games. It’s always nice to come to practice when it’s game week. There’s a great feeling in the air, and we’re ready for it.”

PKMS football teams start season with home sweep of Broken Bow

The 2014 seasons got underway in fine fashion for the Pansy Kidd Middle School football teams Tuesday at Costner Stadium as both teams beat Broken Bow.
The eighth-graders got a 6-0 win over the Savages, after the seventh-graders handled the Savages 34-8.
Both PKMS teams will face McAlester on Sept. 11 at Hook-Eales Stadium in McAlester. The seventh-grade game will begin at 5 p.m. and the eighth-grade contest at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Talihina opens season Thursday night against Wilburton Diggers

The Talihina Golden Tigers made it to the Class A state semifinals last season, and they want to begin such a run in 2014, which will begin with Thursday night’s season opener on the road against the Wilburton Diggers. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
“We had two great scrimmages,” Talihina coach Kelly Gravitt said. “The main thing is we came out of them healthy. Our last scrimmage we had great looks against one of the top teams in Class 2A in Vian. Now, it’s game week. The guys are ready to go against the Diggers.”

Senior linebacker ready to keep 2013 momentum going; Poteau faces Alma, Ark., Thursday night in Hooten's Classic

Although it's been basically 9.5 months since the Poteau Pirates played for the Class 4A state football title, the Pirates believe they're talking momentum from the 2013 season into the 2014 campaign.
“We're pretty excited because of ending on that high from last season,” Poteau senior linebacker Lane Robertson said. “We're excited about starting a tradition here now. We're now hoping that every season will be a deep run into the playoffs and a state championship.”
