WHITESBORO â€” The host Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs and the Howe Lady Lions were victors on opening day of the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs Invitational on Thursday.
Whitesboro got past Clayton 5-3, while Howe blanked Buffalo Valley 8-0.
The third local team in the field, the Leflore Lady Savages, fell 8-0 to the Stringtown Lady Tigers.
There was a chance there was not going to be a Red-White Interteam Scrimmage this preseason due to turf installation issues, but as the saying goes, â€śWhere thereâ€™s a will, thereâ€™s a way.â€ť
The Pirates will have their annual Red-White Scrimmage at 9 a.m. Saturday on the practice field just south of the fieldhouse at Costner Stadium. Admission is small bottles of Gatorade, towels, liquid soap and liquid detergent.
A couple of big innings doomed the Poteau Lady Pirates in their 11-4 home loss to the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Lady Indians on Thursday afternoon.
Wister 3, Red Oak 2, 8 inn.: In Wister, Sooner Vanhookâ€™s two-out, RBI single in the eighth inning scored Stevee McMillin with the game-winning run.
Spiro 9, Colbert 2: At Rock Creek Lady Mustangs Invitational in Blue, the Lady Bulldogs, who trailed 1-0 in the opening inning, scored twice in the first inning and three runs in the second for a 5-1 lead after two innings.
The 2015 season will begin for the Poteau High School cross country teams Saturday at the Riverside 5,000 in Tulsa.

Heavener 8, Howe 0; Heavener 14, Leflore 0; Howe 17, Leflore 4: Tuesday in Heavener, the Lady Wolves won both games in their home openers.
Spiro 8, Wister 3: Tuesday in Wister, the Lady Bulldogs opened their season victoriously by breaking a 3-all tie with a single run in the third inning and four runs in the fifth â€” highlighted by Shakyrah Gladnessâ€™ grand-slam home run.
SMITHVILLE â€” The Howe Lions dropped their season opener 8-1 to the Smithville Braves on Tuesday afternoon.
Red Oak 19, Leflore 0: In Red Oak, the Eagles spoiled the debut of Mark Warren as new coach for the Savages.

The Mark Reichert era got underway at Pocola in fine fashion as his new team, the Pocola Lady Indians, opened their 2015 fast-pitch softball season with a 17-9 road win over the Poteau Lady Pirates on Monday afternoon.
With the game tied at 4 after six innings, the Lady Indians erupted with 13 runs in the seventh inning, aided by five Poteau errors, to take a 17-4 lead.
Cameron 10, Crowder 3: In Cameron, Cameron pitcher Dakotha Battice struck out seven batters and allowed only one earned run as the Lady Yellowjackets got their fall season off and flying.
