Four local softball teams made it to Tuesday's winner's-bracket quarterfinals at the Panama Summer Tournament.
Tournament-host Panama beat Keota in the final game of the day Monday night, while Poteau defeated Ozark, Spiro beat Whitesboro and Red Oak got a bye into the quarterfinals.
The title game is set for 7:50 p.m. Thursday, with the if-game at 9 p.m.
When watching this month's LeFlore County Summer Basketball League games, fans will notice changes with the Talihina teams as each got new coaches — who both just happened to come from Leflore Public Schools.
Leflore basketball and girls softball coach Daniel Caldwell will take over the Golden Tigers from coach Darian Dickson, who left to take the coaching job with the Oktaha Tigers.
Caldwell's Leflore girls assistant coach and Savage baseball coach David Morris also headed south with him as Morris will be the new Lady Golden Tigers coach, replacing Cyndi James.
Blake Blagg-Tidwell, a 6-4 guard from Whitesboro, signed a basketball letter of intent with the Carl Albert State College Vikings in a signing ceremony Thursday morning at CASC.
The Whitesboro graduate is looking forward to playing close to home.
“I am really excited to keep playing basketball,” Blagg-Tidwell said. “It has always been a dream of mine to play college basketball. I am really happy to get the opportunity to come play at Carl Albert because it is close to home.”
The saying “Third time’s the charm’” certainly held true for the final day of the 43rd annual Kiamichi All-Star Classic, featuring softball and baseball games.
After being rained out and/or canceled due to wet fields on May 24 and May 30, the games finally took place Wednesday afternoon at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.
Several LeFlore County and area athletes participated in both games, both taken by the South.

The LeFlore County Bass Club’s open tournament that was slated for Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake has been canceled due to flooding.
It will be rescheduled at a later date.
It’s taken a while, but Wolf Ridge Country Club is ready to have tournament action take place, which will happen Saturday and Sunday with the first annual Wolf Ridge Invitational. However, it hasn’t been easy getting the course ready — namely repairing the greens.
“Getting the greens back healthy was the biggest issue we had,” said Steve Scowden, the tournament’s director. “There were a handful [of greens] better than others, but overall the health of the greens was a real struggle.”

Three years ago, then-Panama boys basketball coach Greg Nichols decided to retire, and take advantage of the opportunity to still coach — being the Greenwood [Ark.] Bulldogs basketball team's assistant coach.
Earlier this spring, Greenwood coach Brian Martin surprisingly took another job, and everyone convinced Nichols to apply for it — and he got it.
