Talihina wrestlers begin season in this weekend’s McAlester Tournament

The Talihina High School wrestling team, all four members strong, will begin its season in this weekend’s McAlester Tournament at Brumley Gym. Action today will begin at 5 p.m., with the final day of matches commencing at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday. They will be joined locally at the two-day event by the Poteau Pirates, who wrestled in Thursday night’s dual at Vian.
The Golden Tigers return their lone state qualifier of a season ago, Domnick Shedd, who will be at 195 pounds.

The Poteau Pirates Quarterback Club will have a fundraising Frito chili pie dinner from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center. The dinner is $5 per person.
There will also be a pie auction as well as tickets being sold for a drawing for a Colt rifle.
All proceeds will help fund future expenses for the Poteau Pirates Quarterback Club.

Shady Poin, Wister girls, Talihina, Hodgen boys make JH LCT consolation semifinals

At least one of the 2015 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament host teams still has a shot at some hardware.
The Shady Point Lady Warriors, the host team, made it to Thursday’s consolation semifinals with a 28-26 victory over the Panama Lady Razorbacks in Wednesday’s consolation quarterfinals at the Shady Point Gym.
The Wister Lady Wildcats were the other girls team at this site to win their consolation quarterfinal, rallying to down Arkoma 37-29.

Howe, Monroe boys, Fanshawe, Cameron girls reach consolation semifinals in JH County Tournament

Four local teams kept their stay at the 2015 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament going for at least one more day during Wednesday’s action at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
The Howe Lions got past the Fanshawe Grizzlies 38-22, while the Monroe Eagles, last year’s champions, stayed alive as they held off the Leflore Savages 24-21.
On the girls’ side, the Fanshawe Lady Grizzlies defeated the Monroe Lady Eagles 25-16, while the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets beat the Pocola Lady Indians 31-25.

TALIHINA — The Howe Lions opened the second half of the basketball season in fine fashion as they nipped the Talihina Golden Tigers 41-40 Tuesday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
The Lions trailed 14-10 after a period, but outscored the Golden Tigers 15-8 in the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead.
Leading 35-29 entering the final period, the Lions had to withstand a fourth-quarter rally by the Golden Tigers, who outscored them 11-6 in the final eight minutes but the comeback rally fell short.

POCOLA — The Panama Lady Razorbacks rallied from a first-quarter deficit to down their archrivals, the Pocola Lady Indians, 48-44 in overtime Tuesday night at the Pocola Gym.
Trailing 13-7 after a period and 23-17 at halftime, the Lady Razorbacks outscored the Lady Indians 15-10 in the third quarter and 9-8 in the final period to tie the game at 41 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Panama outscored Pocola 7-3 to complete the comeback.

Coffeyville teams sweep CASC, which plays tonight at NOC-Tonkawa

Getting a season-high 30 points from Alyssa Banks wasn’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings as they opened the second half of the 2014-15 season with an 84-60 loss to the Coffeyville [Kan.] Community College Lady Ravens on Tuesday night.
Despite having four double-figure scorers, it wasn’t enough for the Vikings as they opened the second half of the season with a 92-74 loss to the Raven in Tuesday night’s second game.

Top-seeded Whitesboro, Panama boys make championship semifinals; Heavener girls edge PKMS, while Spiro girls handle Whitesboro

The top-seeded Whitesboro Bulldogs and the fifth-seeded Panama Razorbacks reached Friday night’s championship semifinals of the 2015 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, which will be at 6:30 p.m. at Carl Albert State College’s Mick Thompson Fieldhouse with quarterfinal victories Tuesday at Shady Point.
The Bulldogs were too much for the Arkoma Mustangs as the ’Dogs prevailed 40-18, while the Razorbacks got past No. 4 Heavener 49-40 in the other quarterfinal.

PKMS, Pocola boys reach semifinals as Indians pull upset on No. 3 Spiro; Howe girls handle Leflore to make semifinals; Talihina upsets No. 3 Hodgen in Tuesday’s quarterfinals

The two highest-seeded teams who played at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym in Tuesday’s championship quarterfinals of the 2015 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, the second-seeded Poteau/Pansy Kidd Middle School Raiders and the top-seeded Howe Lady Lions, both advanced to Friday night’s championship semifinals at Carl Albert State College’s Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Raiders got past Wister 40-33, while the Lady Lions roared past Leflore 52-8.

Poteau teams split Monday's road games at Broken Bow; Lady Pirate rally comes up short in comeback bid

BROKEN BOW — It almost was a road sweep for the Poteau High School basketball teams, but it ended up being a split of Monday night's contests against Broken Bow.
The Pirates rallied from a second-half deficit to down the host Savages 48-44, while the Lady Pirates almost rallied from a double-digit, first-quarter deficit but ended up losing 55-53.
