Whitesboro high jumper glad to make state meet

For each of the last two basketball seasons, Dakota Farris and his Whitesboro teammates have been within a win of making the Class B State Tournament, only to lose both the area finals and consolation finals in back-to-back nights to end their seasons.
Thus, making it to this weekend’s Class A State Track Meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Midwest City Carl Albert High School’s Titan Stadium, is a great feeling.
“I was excited because I finally had succeeded in my goal to make it to state,” Farris said.

Pocola softball seniors glad to end career with trip to state

One thing Pocola softball seniors Madison Hudkins, Brooklyn Morton and Desi Carter had not experienced was a trip to state. That changed Thursday afternoon when the Lady Indians won the Class 4A Regional Tournanment in Oktaha.

For the second straight spring, two slow-pitch softball teams made state. This year, it's the Wister Lady Wildcats and the Pocola Lady Indians. Wister plays its Class 3A State Tournament today, while the Class 4A State Tournament for Pocola will be Wednesday — both at the Ballfield at Firelake in Shawnee. Today's edition will have the Class 3A State Tournament bracket, while the Class 4A State Tournament bracket will be in Wednesday's edition.

Wister senior wants to end softball career on high note with state title

The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team will make its second straight slow-pitch state tournament appearance, and third straight state tournament counting last fall’s Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
“It’s an awesome feeling to be back in the state tournament for the third time in a row,” said first baseman Ciara Covey, Wister’s only senior. “We worked very hard all season. Getting that state ticket punched is the payoff.”

Heavener baseball player signs with Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College

When this baseball season ends for Heavener senior Noah Davis, he made sure that wasn’t going to be the end of his career on the diamond.
Davis signed a letter of intent with Hillsdale Free Will Baptist, which is located in Moore, in a signing ceremony inside the high school library Thursday morning.

Poteau soccer senior girls glad to be part of history; Lady Pirates open playoffs Friday night at Inola

History was made last Friday night when the Poteau Lady Pirates soccer team beat Hilldale 2-0 to clinch the third seed from the district and make the playoffs for the first time in school history.
However, just making the playoffs aren’t enough for the Lady Pirates, who will open postseason play at 6 p.m. Friday with a road match against the Inola Lady Longhorns.

Two wrestlers getting more chances; Galetka selected to wrestle for East team in All-Star Dual in June, while Hornbuckle to have chance to hit mats ‘Down Under’

When the 2014-15 high school wrestling season ended in February, little did two Poteau wrestlers realize there was going to be more chances for them this summer.
Senior Hank Galetka was selected to wrestle with the East team in the All-Star Duals, which will take place June 26 in Blanchard.
Teammate Roderick Hornbuckle, a junior, is going to have the chance to go to Australia to wrestle in the Down Under Sports Wrestling Tournament, which will take place June 27-July 7 — with opportunities to see not only Australia, but New Zealand and Hawaii.
