For three Poteau Pirate wrestlers, Khy Mote, Daylon Brewton and Devin Anderson, there's nothing more they want to do than make state in their final opportunities to do so. They will get that chance today and Saturday at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Bristow. The top four finishers in each weight class will make the state tournament the following weekend in Oklahoma City.
Editor's note: The Talihina wrestlers will be at the Class 3A Regional Tournament today and Saturday at Plainview High School in Ardmore.
SHAWNEE â€” The Hodgen Lady Bulldogs won their Organization of Rural Elementary Schools [ORES] Division II State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at St. Gregory's University, downing Harmony 39-38.
The Lady Bulldogs will play tonight in the state semifinals for a shot at the state title on Saturday.
The Monroe Eagles, who won the 2014 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, played their quarterfinal game in the ORES Division III State Tournament on Thursday at Seminole State College.
The LeFlore County Bass Club had its second tournament of the 2014 circuit Sunday at Chicken Creek on Lake Tenkiller. There were 26 boats with 48 anglers who only caught a grand total of 11 fish weighing a collective 31.41 pounds. Each fish caught averaged 2.86 pounds.
Jerrid Keller and Bobby Williams won the event with 8.22 pounds to win $600. Jeff Hardin and Dennis Roper were runners-up (6.85 pounds, $360).
CLEVELAND, Okla. â€” The Leflore Lady Savages stayed alive in the Class B playoffs with a 49-23 win over the Paden Lady Pirates in the consolation side of the regional tournament Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Savages will play in the consolation semifinals here at 6:30 tonight with the winner playing for the consolation championship here at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the right to go to next week's Class B Area Tournament at Sand Springs.
The news wasn't as good for the Bokoshe Tigers, who were eliminated 56-47 by the Paden Pirates, to finish the season at 1-20.
STUART â€” The Class A playoffs came to an end for the Cameron Yellowjackets Thursday afternoon as they lost 73-71 to the Clayton Bulldogs in the regional tournament consolation quarterfinals to end their season at 12-13.
The Arkoma Lady Mustangs and Mustangs played the host teams Thursday night for the right to get to Saturday night's regional title games, and earn automatic berths to next week's Class A Area Tournament at Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Bloomer Sullivan Fieldhouse in Durant.
TALIHINA â€” The Talihina Golden Tigers ended the regular season in fine fashion Tuesday night with a 46-40 home victory over the Antlers Bearcats on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
Lady Luck did not go in the Lady Golden Tigers' favor as they lost a heartbreaking 32-29 game to the Lady Bearcats in Tuesday night's first game.
The regular season as well as Senior Night ended well for the Poteau High School basketball teams Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse as they both handled county rival Heavener.
The Pirates handled the Wolves 55-37, which came on the heels of the Lady Pirates' 77-50 victory over the Lady Wolves.
MUSKOGEE â€” The Carl Albert State College softball team used the long ball â€” as in nine home runs in the two games combined â€” to get a sweep of the Bacone College JV Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to six homers, the Lady Vikings run ruled the hosts 19-9 in five innings in the opener, then had to rally from an early deficit to post a 14-11 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.
The Lady Vikings will return home this afternoon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Crowder, Mo.
Behind five double-figure scorers and great defensive pressure which led to transition baskets, the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings came away with an impressive 75-65 win over the Murray State College Lady Aggies on Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Holding the Aggies to eight points the first 13:17 of the second half was the difference for the Vikings in their 71-57 win in the nightcap of Monday night's doubleheader.
ARKOMA â€” The Arkoma High School basketball teams won the Class A District Tournament on Saturday night at the Arkoma Gym, but by different styles.
The Mustangs got a last-second shot by Josh Marion to down the Cameron Yellowjackets 52-50, but the Lady Mustangs were too much for the Gans Lady Grizzlies as Arkoma prevailed 93-68.
The Yellowjackets got to the district title game with a 72-52 win over the Gans Grizzlies on Friday night, but the season ended for the Cameron girls as they lost 59-52 to Gans on Friday night.
