One dead following attempt to cross flooded roadway

June 2, 2015

A Clayton man died Monday morning after driving through barricades marking a road closed due to flood waters.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 73-year-old Benjamin Morris drove his 2009 Chevy pickup through flooded waters crossing Oklahoma Highway 87 southeast of Tom in McCurtain County. The vehicle stalled and Morris attempted to get out of the truck. OHP reported Morris was overcome by the rising water and drowned.

UPDATE: Business destroyed by fire was set for Sheriff's Sale same day

Poor Boy Livestock Auction in Wister was destroyed by fire early Tuesday [June 2] morning.
Wister, Howe, Fanshawe and Poteau Fire Departments all responded to the blaze.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the property, which was set to be sold at 10 a.m. today [June 2] during a Sheriff's Sale at the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office will not be sold after the cancellation of the sale, according to Undersheriff Kendall Morgan.

Wister softball player named to USA Elite Midwest Team; Anson will play with nation's best 11-year-olds July 13-16 in Kissimmee

One LeFlore County softball player will get a chance to play with the best of the best this summer in "The Sunshine State."
Wister's Sage Anson, who will be a seventh-grader this next school year, was named to the Age 11-and-Younger USA Elite Midwest Regional Softball Team. Her team will play in the USA Elite Softball Tournament on July 13-16 in Kissimmee, Fla.
"I was speechless," Anson said about making the team after trying out March 14 in Tulsa. "I couldn't believe it. I didn't know what to think. I'm excited that I was going to get to go."

Poteau Valley Improvement Authority meeting Tuesday

The Poteau Valley Improvement Authority will hold their regular meeting Tuesday, June 2 at Poteau City Hall.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Coach's resignation on Talihina School agenda

Talihina School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight [June 1] at the Board of Education Building on Isherwood Street.
Items to be discussed include Superintendent's Report, regular business and the resignation of the Junior High Boys Coach.

Two local softball players make All-State, with another named an All-State alternate; Slow-Pitch All-State Games slated for June 20 at University of Oklahoma (EDITED)

Two LeFlore County slow-pitch softball players got the ultimate honor of being named an All-Stater.
Heavener's Makayla Cheek and Pocola's Madison Hudkins were named All-Staters.
Cheek will be on the Large East, while Hudkins will be on the Middle East.
Cheek's teammate, Lexi Moody, is an alternate for the Large East team.
The Slow-Pitch All-State Games will take place June 20 at the University of Oklahoma.

New Poteau coach likes where his new team is at as spring practice ended Friday

While spring football practice began last week for the Poteau Pirates, new coach Forrest Mazey could not be present as he was putting the final touches on his departure from Mangum and the birth of his third son.
However, the new coach was present this week, and he liked what he saw in spring practice, which ended Friday afternoon.
This week, Mazey basically tried to mesh his concepts with the current Pirates’ system of doing things, which he said was a success.

Heavener looks good in spring action against Wilburton, Keys (Park Hill)

The Heavener Wolves wrapped up their 2015 spring football practice with a three-way scrimmage with Wilburton and Keys (Park Hill) on Friday morning at Harvey Stadium.
While the Heavener No. 2s didn’t score, the No. 1s did. Quarterback Trey Grubbs went up the middle against Keys (Park Hill) for about a 40-yard TD.
To end the three-way, Heavener and Willburton played a more game-like situation, and the Wolves scored with their No. 1s on about a 60-yard scamper by Luke McGee.

Tulsa Health Department detects West Nile virus mosquitoes

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Officials with the Tulsa Health Department say a sampling of mosquitoes from Tulsa County has tested positive for West Nile virus.

The months of July through October are typically the highest risk months for exposure to West Nile in Oklahoma, but the Health Department begins a mosquito surveillance program each May. And although there have been no confirmed cases of West Nile in humans, officials say it's important for residents to take precautions against the potentially deadly virus.
