Several Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates were honored at the 2014 Poteau Basketball Banquet, which took place Wednesday night at The Community State Bank's banquet room.

Omer Lee Adams

Omer Lee Adams, 83, of Caddo, formerly of Poteau died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in Caddo. Omer Lee was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Wister to Truman and Vangie (Hawkins) Adams. He was a mechanic. Omer Lee was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dema; daughter, Becky; brothers, Howard and Denver; sister, Laverne Moran.
Survivors include his daughter, Cassie Stafford of Caddo; grandson, Kody Blaylock of San Diego, Calif.; sisters, Lucille Mote of Wilburton and Lorene Upchurch of Edmond; other relatives, loved ones and friends.

Poteau boys golf team, Pirate individual win Ranger Invitational

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates golf team and Poteau golfer Cody Shore won titles at the Roland Ranger Invitational, which took place Tuesday at Ben Geren Golf Course.
The Pirates won the team title with a 309, finishing six shots ahead of Sallisaw (315).
Individually, Shore was the top medalist with a 69, and he was not the only Pirate medalist.
Connor Wheat was the sixth-place medalist at 79, Jarrett Lowrimore was seventh (80) and John Scott Sanders was eighth (81). Jerry Loggains shot a 98.

CASC softball team splits home pair with Seminole State; Lady Vikings played Wednesday afternoon at NOC-Enid; today's twinbill at Murray State canceled, will not be rescheduled

The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team split its home doubleheader with Seminole State College on Tuesday afternoon. After losing the opener 12-9 in nine innings, the Lady Vikings beat the Lady Belles 9-3 in the nightcap.
The Lady Vikings, who played Wednesday afternoon in a road doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, were to have played a road twinbill against Murray State College this afternoon at the Johnston County Sports Complex in Tishomingo, but it was canceled and will not be made up.

Coffeyville Ravens fly past CASC Vikings; Carl Albert visits NOC-Enid this afternoon for a doubleheader

Carl Albert State College baseball team's home game Tuesday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field was for the birds, or more specifically the Ravens.
The Coffeyville (Kan.) Ravens dominated the Vikings in an 18-3 victory.
The Vikings will return to action this afternoon in a road doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid. The twinbill will begin at 1 p.m. at Phillips-Failing Park.

Poteau soccer teams sweep Heavener; Pirates clinch district title; Lady Pirates in playoff hunt

The 2014 high school county soccer games, the yearly match-ups between Heavener and Poteau, took place Tuesday at Costner Stadium, with the home teams winning to celebrate Senior Night.
The Pirates sealed up the District 4A-6 title with a 4-0 victory over the Wolves, while the Lady Pirates kept their playoff hopes alive with a 7-0 shutout of the Lady Wolves.

A seventh-inning rally by the Stigler Panthers propeled them to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Poteau Pirates on Tuesday afternoon at Town Creek Park.
Down 3-1 with only three outs remaining, Austin Drewry's RBI single and a three-run home run by Quantez Jim produced four runs to give the Panthers the win.
Howe 12, Bokoshe 4: In Bokoshe, the Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead after an inning, aided by six of the nine Bokoshe errors in the game.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves continued their winning ways Tuesday afternoon, run ruling the Wister Lady Wildcats 8-0 in five innings.
The Lady Wolves, fresh off last week's first-ever county softball tournament title, broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the second inning and two in the third. Then, a five-run fifth inning that ended with Mattison Place's three-run home run put the game into run-rule status.
Whitesboro 13, Smithville 1; Smithville 11, Whitesboro 1: In Smithville, the Lady Bulldogs split Tuesday's twinbill.

Betty (Deaton) Nichols

Betty (Deaton) Nichols, 80, of Poteau died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. Betty was born June 21, 1933, in Poteau to Bill and Blanche Deaton. Betty graduated from the University of Arkansas with a BS in education. She was a retired science teacher of 22 years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Poteau. She was honored as Poteau and Regional Teacher of the Year, Teacher of Excellence, inducted into the Oklahoma Science and Engineering Science Fair Hall of Fame and a member of DKG International Society.
