Dale Sanders, 93, of Poteau died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, in Poteau. William was born March 22, 1921, in Fanshawe to Snowden and Addie (Thurman) Sanders. William owned and operated a grocery store and service station in Buffalo Valley and Summerfield. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin and Eldred Sanders; and sister, Juanita Gwin.

Rhonda Owens, 46, of Heavener died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 6, at First Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial was in Conser Cemetery under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home.

Brexton Oakley Francis of Spiro was born and passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2014, in Oklahoma City.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Drew Brees has eclipsed 40,000 yards passing for the New Orleans Saints, becoming the fastest in NFL history to hit that mark with a single team. Brees went over the mark with an 8-yard pass to running back Travaris Cadet in the first quarter of his 132nd game with the Saints, a club he joined as a free agent in 2006. The mark Brees surpassed was held by Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who reached 40,000 yards in his 153rd game with the Miami Dolphins.

The mayor and members of the Poteau City council will convene in a regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Poteau City Hall immediately following the meetings of the Poteau Public Works Authority.

Consideration to approve Ordinance 733 to amend the Oklahoma Retirement Fund Defined Benefit Plan.

Consideration to change a holiday from December 24th to December 26th.

High court denies gay marriage appeals

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court cleared the way Monday for an immediate expansion of same-sex marriage by unexpectedly and tersely turning away appeals from five states seeking to prohibit gay and lesbian unions. The court's order effectively makes gay marriage legal now in 30 states.

Without comment, the justices brought to an end delays in same-sex marriages in five states— Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. Chief Justice John Roberts did not say a word about same-sex marriage as he began the court's new term.

Keota Lions roar past Arkoma

ARKOMA — The Keota Lions kept their dominance over the Arkoma Mustangs going, beating them 56-8 Friday night at Mustang Field in a District B-4 game. The game ended in the third quarter by the mercy rule.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Lions (5-0 overall, 4-0 in district play) over the Mustangs (1-4, 0-4), who have lost four straight since opening the season with a 46-0 win over the Bokoshe Tigers.

Bokoshe falls on homecoming to Cave Springs Hornets

BOKOSHE — The Cave Springs Hornets spoiled homecoming for the Bokoshe Tigers as they blanked the locals 48-0 Friday night at Tiger Stadium. The game ended by mercy rule with two minutes left in the final period.
The Hornets (5-0 overall, 4-0 in District C-4) pitched a shutout well into the second half, leading 34-0 in the third quarter.
The Tigers (0-5, 0-3) had two scoring chances in the second half. A third-quarter drive stalled at the Cave Springs 25, while the other ended with a turnover at the Hornets’ 8 in the final period.
