PKMS, Hodgen girls, Heavener, Wister boys playing for fifth place

Thursday’s games at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym set up Saturday afternoon’s match-ups at Carl Albert State College’s Mick Thompson Fieldhouse for fifth place in the 2015 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament.
The girls’ fifth-place game will pit the Poteau/Pansy Kidd Middle School Lady Raiders against the Hodgen Lady Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at CASC. The Lady Raiders survived a late Leflore rally to down the Lady Savages 34-28, while the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 31-25.

Oklahoma ranks low in latest national report on education

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The latest "Quality Counts" report ranks Oklahoma 48th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the quality of education it provides students.

The report issued Thursday focuses on educational outcomes while looking at academic achievement, school funding and the chance for success students have when they grow up.

Oklahoma received a D-plus, which placed it ahead of Mississippi, Nevada and New Mexico. Massachusetts led the nation with a B.

Talihina wrestlers begin season in this weekend’s McAlester Tournament

The Talihina High School wrestling team, all four members strong, will begin its season in this weekend’s McAlester Tournament at Brumley Gym. Action today will begin at 5 p.m., with the final day of matches commencing at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday. They will be joined locally at the two-day event by the Poteau Pirates, who wrestled in Thursday night’s dual at Vian.
The Golden Tigers return their lone state qualifier of a season ago, Domnick Shedd, who will be at 195 pounds.

The Poteau Pirates Quarterback Club will have a fundraising Frito chili pie dinner from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center. The dinner is $5 per person.
There will also be a pie auction as well as tickets being sold for a drawing for a Colt rifle.
All proceeds will help fund future expenses for the Poteau Pirates Quarterback Club.
