Last-second shot lifts Whitesboro boys past Howe Lions in EOSC Classic; Howe girls too much for Bokoshe; Lady Bulldogs, fall in semifinals, while Tigers eliminated with loss

WILBURTON — In a game that could very well determine how their seeding will go come this month’s seeding meeting for the 2015 LeFlore County Tournament, the Whitesboro Bulldogs got an edge on the Howe Lions.
Whitesboro’s Blake Blagg-Tidwell hit a basket with 4.5 seconds left to lift the ’Dogs to a 33-31 victory over the Lions in the championship semifinals of the Blue Bracket of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic on Wednesday night at the Wilburton High School Gym.

Heavener boys beat Oden, Ark., for first win of basketball season

HARTFORD, Ark. — The Heavener Wolves basketball team got its first win of the season Wednesday night, beating Oden, Ark., 67-28 in the Gary Ford Invitational. Unlike most tournaments that have a consolation championship game, this event does not have one. Thus, the Wolves have no more games in the tournament.

Pirates young, athletic this basketball season under new head coach

Editor’s note: This is the first of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams. The Lady Pirates’ season preview story will be in Friday’s edition.

The Poteau Pirates basketball team made it to the Class 4A Area Tournament before its season ended at 12-14. They’re hoping for bigger and better things when the 2014-15 season gets started at 8 p.m. Friday with a road game against the McAlester Buffaloes at Brumley Gym.

NEO teams sweep Carl Albert

Getting 24 points from Alyssa Banks wasn’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 73-72 overtime loss to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Golden Norse on Tuesday night in Miami, Okla.
Getting 18 points from Mairega Clark and 16 points from Chris Bates wasn’t enough for the Vikings in their 93-81 loss to NEO.
The CASC teams will return home tonight to entertain Seminole State at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. The women’s game will be at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 8 p.m.

McDonald Pigskin Picks winner for second straight week, fifth time overall

Russ McDonald won the Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks Contest for the second straight week, for the fifth time this season and the fourth time outright. He was he only contestant to go 10-2 in last week's contest. He earned $25 for his victory.

POCOLA — The Pocola Lady Indians won their season opener for new coach Eric Ladd as they held off the Stigler Lady Panthers 57-52 on Tuesday night at the Pocola Gym.
Trailing 15-13 after a period, the Lady Indians used a 11-1 run to end the first half to take a 31-23 lead at halftime.
Pocola’s lead got to as much as 15 points, 45-30, in the third quarter, only to see Stigler cut the deficit to 54-50 with about two minutes left to play. However, the Lady Panthers got no closer.

POCOLA — The Stigler Panthers spoiled the debut of new Pocola boys coach, and Pocola alum, Scott Nelke as they beat the Indians 51-42 on Tuesday night at the Pocola Gym.
Leading 24-22 at halftime, a 6-0 run to begin the third quarter helped the Panthers outscore the Indians 16-6 in the period to take a 40-28 lead into the final quarter.
However, Pocola did not go down without a fight. Kaleb Verschage’s basket with about three minutes left to play cut the Stigler lead to 44-42, but the Indians got no closer.

Leflore teams, Arkoma girls win Gold Bracket openers at EOSC Classic, but Mustangs lose

WILBURTON — Both Leflore teams and the Arkoma Lady Mustangs posted opening-day victories in Gold Bracket play at the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic, which took place Tuesday at both EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse and the Wilburton High School Gym.
The Savages beat Panola 75-32, while the Lady Savages handled Battiest 58-20. Both Leflore teams will play Buffalo Valley in the championship semifinals Thursday night at the Wilburton Gym, with the girls playing at 7:10 p.m. and the boys at 8:30 p.m.

Kay Frances Franklin Truitt, 73, of Heavener died Nov. 23, 2014, in Heavener.A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener.

Dorothy Marie Buckmaster

Dorothy Marie Buckmaster, 89, of Suffolk, Va., formerly of Arkoma and Oxnard, Calif., died Nov. 25, 2014, in Suffolk.

She was born April 30, 1925, in Panama to Robert E. and Emma Wells Steele. Dorothy was a homemaker, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 2036 and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Suffolk.

She is survived by her son, Robert Buckmaster of Suffolk; daughter, Sue Stiles of Ventura, Calif.; a brother, Everett Steele of Arkoma, as well as four grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Blair Buckmaster and a brother, Nelson Steele.
