Nicholas Graves returns home from second tour of duty in Afghanistan

Total joy, love and gratitude were evident to all as Combat Medic Army Spc. Nicholas Benton Graves was welcomed home to Ft. Drum, N.Y. from his second deployment to Afghanistan, Monday, July 28. There to greet  Graves was his wife, Army veteran Tracie Copeland Graves, from Poteau, his son Ben Graves and daughter Alexis Graves. Welcoming from afar are his family, friends and grateful nation.

Poteau City Council Meeting set for 7 p.m. [Aug. 4]

The Poteau City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, August 4 at the Poteau City Hall at 111, Peters St., in Poteau, Oklahoma, for a regularly scheduled meeting.

On agenda will be the presentation of service pins to Larry Wann and Gary Billings, as well as several ordinance and annex changes, along with an update on the Kelly Lane trailers cleanup.

Child Support collects nearly $1 million a day for children and families in SFY 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Child Support Services (CSS) collected $362,470,719 on behalf of children and families between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014, a new collections record. That is an average of $993,070.46 per day in State Fiscal Year 2014.

“It is impressive, and we are very proud to have reached this new record,” said CSS Director Gary W. Dart. “But for those for whom we have been unable to collect, we know it is not enough. We will continue our efforts until every child receives the court-ordered support he or she is entitled to.”

Poteau Police,Choctaw Tribal and Oklahoma Highway Patrol currently are at the Choctaw Travel Plaza in Poteau after receiving information about a possible bomb.
The OHP bomb squad just arrived on location (Aug. 3 7:59 P.M.)

Virginia Gayle Twilla, 54, of Poteau, formerly of Heavener died Thursday, July 31, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener is handling arrangements.

Janice Laverne Abernathy, 72, of Bokoshe, died Thursday, July 31, 2014, in Bokoshe. Janice was born Sept. 13, 1941, in Bokoshe to Raymond Forrest and Pearl E. (Brown) Richardson. Janice was a loving wife, wonderful, caring mother and grandmother. She was willing to sacrifice anything for her children and family regardless of her plans or how she felt. Janice loved watching her children, grand and great-grandchildren play sports. She especially enjoyed family gatherings. She attended New Life Gospel Church in Panama.

Spiro hoopster helps Small East down Small West in All-State Game; Red Oak’s Deatherage, who will play college baseball at EOSC, played in final competitive basketball contest

Spiro’s Knifeis Carter was all over the floor while leading the East with 16 points Thursday night in the Oklahoma Coaches Association Small School All-State Boys Basketball game at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center in Tulsa.
Carter made some big plays that consisted of a stretch of steals and rebounds, helping his team in a 28-7 fourth-quarter run en route to a 72-56 win against the West.
Bryce Deatherage of Red Oak also was in the game. He scored two points with his only basket coming on a first-quarter lay-up.

Fall ball is fast approaching; Panama Preseason Festival scheduled for next week; 2014 Fall Diamond Tab publishing Aug. 16

With the arrival of August means the arrival of fall ball on the diamond with the 2014 fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons beginning Aug. 12.
That means the first sports special section of the 2014-15 season will come out soon — the 2014 Falll Diamond Tab, which will be published on Aug. 16. Therefore, I'll begin to work on that at the end of next week.
As always, the Panama Preseason Softball Festival will be Thursday through Saturday as a prelude to the season. The schedule will be listed below.
