Sallisaw-Central handles Pocola Indians

The Sallisaw-Central Tigers pounded the Pocola Indians 48-22 in the 2014 opener for both teams Friday night at Sallisaw-Central High School.
The Indians got the ball on their own 49-yard line to start the game. They promptly marched down the field for a touchdown. Quarterback Kyler Ree hit Corey Edwards for a 14-yard pitch-and-catch, which gave Pocola its only lead of the half at 6-0.
The Tigers’ offense was in tune this night scoring on drives of 69, 62, 26 and 81 yards rolling to a 34-6 halftime lead.

Police officer charged with assault freed on bond

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma City police officer charged with sexually assaulting several women he encountered while patrolling neighborhoods around the state Capitol is now free on $500,000 bond.

Jailers said 27-year-old Daniel Holtzclaw was freed Friday but on several conditions. He is under house arrest and can go only to court and his attorney's office. He must turn in his police gear, guns and badge and is prohibited from contacting any alleged victims.

Arkoma, Bokoshe renew county 8-man rivalry; Heavener, Pocola, Spiro open season tonight in road games

The latest installment of the LeFlore County 8-man battle between the Arkoma Mustangs and the Bokoshe Tigers will take place at 7:30 tonight in Bokoshe.
“It's a big game,” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “It's our closest game we're going to have. It's the only team in the county who plays 8-man ball like we do. It's for bragging rights. Even though it's not for a district win, it's still for bragging rights, and we want to keep them. We want to come out fired up and get it done Friday night.”

Panama girls get top seed for 2014 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament

The Panama Lady Razorbacks garnered the nod as the top seed in the 2014 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which will be Sept. 15-18 at Panama.

OK State Series motocross races coming to RaceDay

The Oklahoma State Series of motocross racing will take place this weekend at RaceDay Park Mx. There will be close to 200 of the best motocross racers in the state right here at our local track.
Racers will practice from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with races beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday. There will be a $10 gate fee.
If you have never been to a motocross race, this will be a great opportunity for you to do so. Warning — they will be scary fast!

Poteau hangs tough with Alma in Hooten’s Classic

Although the Poteau Pirates football team held its own against Arkansas’ Class 6A Alma Airedales, it was one key thing which coach Greg Werner was fearful of which helped put the Pirates in an early hole in the 2014 season opener in the Hooten’s Classic on Thursday night at Mayo-Thompson Stadium at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School. That was a slow start.
The Pirates fell 28-0 to the Airedales.

Panama boys handle Gore to open season

The 2014 season got started in fine fashion for the Panama Razorbacks on Thursday night at Panama’s George Ollie Stadium as they handled the Gore Pirates 34-6.
With the game tied at 6 after a period, the Razorbacks scored 15 unanswered points in the second period to end up with a 21-6 halftime lead.

Talihina football team routs Wilburton

WILBURTON — The Talihina Golden Tigers football team got 2014 started in the right direction with a 62-13 rout of the Wilburton Diggers on Thursday night.
Quarterback Alan Lockhart was involved in five of the seven first-half touchdowns for the Golden Tigers, three of them in the opening quarter.

William Floyd “Bill” Taylor, 65, of Poteau died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, in Poteau.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in Evans Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau.
Family visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home.
