Education workshop coming to Poteau

November 7, 2014

The new standards were adopted by the State Board of Education and signed into rule by Gov. Mary Fallin this summer. They replace Priority Academic Student Skills science standards. State science assessments will not be aligned to these new standards, however, until 2016-2017 so that districts and teachers have time to transition.

The Poteau Pirates likely will play for the last time this season at Costner Stadium Friday night when they entertain the Tulsa Central Braves at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night. Senior Night festivities will take place before the game.
“It’s big,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “You always want to have your seniors’ last home game to be a big one. We certainly want to send them off on the right way. They’re a great group of kids. We want it to be a good night. Senior Night always provides a lot of motivation. Hopefully, it will this week.”

Spiro entertains Valliant in battle of Bulldogs, seeks extending winning streak to three games

November 6, 2014

Last year, the Spiro Bulldogs opened the season 9-0 and only needed to beat Checotah to win the District 3A-8 title. Instead, they lost to the Wildcats and dropped all the way down to third place. Then, the ’Dogs fell to Hilldale in the Class 3A playoff opener to end their season.
Spiro (6-2 overall, 3-2 in district play) does not want that to happen this season. In fact, Spiro can enter the postseason on a three-game winning streak if it takes care of Valliant (0-9, 0-5) at 7 p.m. Friday at McClain Stadium to celebrate Senior Night.
