Weather Service: State saw fewest tornadoes in 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Just 16 tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma in 2014, which the National Weather Service says is the fewest on record.

Oklahoma state climatologist Gary McManus says a combination of factors led to the relative lack of tornadoes, The Oklahoman reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/1I8sKK8 ).

Poteau wrestlers fourth at Independence Bowl Tournament; Pirates return to action Thursday night at Vian

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team finished fourth at the Independence Bowl Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday.
The Pirates won their pool on Monday, beating Doyline, La. (66-12), North Desoto, Texas (60-18), Calvary Baptist, La. (66-6) and Sulphur [La.] South Plaquemines (51-27).

Talihina boys end up fourth at Idabel Winter Classic; Lady Golden Tigers, Golden Tigers play road games Saturday night in Preston

IDABEL — The Heavener and Spiro high school basketball teams weren’t the only local hoopsters to see some holiday action this week. So, too, did the Talihina Golden Tigers.
The Golden Tigers finished fourth in the Idabel Winter Classic, which took place Monday through Wednesday.
Talihina, which opened with a 46-42 nailbiting win over the Broken Bow Savages in Monday’s opener, lost 54-42 to the Haworth Lions in Tuesday’s championship semifinals in a battle of two of Class 2A’s top eight teams in the state and fell 75-68 to the host Warriors, ranked in Class 3A, in the third-place game.

Faye Wilta Fullen

Faye Wilta Fullen, 80, of Wister passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, in Wister.

Faye was born Dec. 7, 1934, in Monroe to Ed and Lucy (Cook) Armstrong. She was a physical therapist assistant. She belonged to the Wister United Methodist Church.

Faye was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Fullen; her parents; son, Sonny Fullen; grandchildren, Heather Williams and Gwen Fullen; five sisters, Jane Storie, Delores Brookman, Erma Rutledge, Ann Bell and Pauline Pruitt; four brothers, Bill, Hubert, Charles and Homer Armstrong.

Sidney Paul “Sid” Spencer, 58, of Heavener died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, in Sallisaw. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home in Heavener.
