The Pocola High School Softball Booster Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday on the bleachers at the softball field.

Wolf-Pup Football sign ups will be at 6 p.m. July 31 in the Heavener High School cafeteria.
Those signing up will need to bring a copy of birth certificate along with the $60 entry fee.
The league is open to those who will be in grades three through six, and those signing up can attend any school.

Benefit auction for Heather Russell

Heather Russell, 42, of Poteau has taken care of others as a nurse at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., for 17 years. About three months ago, she was in need of life-saving care after suffering a stroke. Russell is the wife of Poteau Assistant Chief of Police Greg Russell.
A benefit auction will be hosted by the Poteau Police Department on July 26 at 2 p.m. at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau.
Also available during the auction is a $5 burger basket including chips and a drink.
All proceeds will help with associated medical costs.

DC Court ruling supports Oklahoma claims of ACA illegalities

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Scott Pruitt on Tuesday said the legal claims made in 2011 in Oklahoma’s lawsuit challenging the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were upheld Tuesday in a ruling by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

Gas prices take a dive

Oklahoma’s pump price average for regular gasoline has tumbled 18 cents since hitting $3.53 on June 27, according to FuelGaugeReport.AAA.com. The state average has declined for 14 straight days and is now $3.35 per gallon. Nationally, the average price of gas has fallen for 24 consecutive days. Today’s price, $3.565 per gallon, is the lowest since April 2.

Wildcats softball team defeats Starz twice to win national title; two players earn individual honors for tournament

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — There are times when nothing comes easy, just ask the Wildcats softball team.
The Wildcats, based out of Pocola, had to beat the Ohio Starz from Newark, Ohio, twice on Friday to win the Age 10-and-Younger Class C USSSA World Series at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
After the ’Cats lost 8-6 to the Starz in the winner's-bracket final, the Wildcats beat the Starz back to back, winning the first title game 4-0, then the second title contest 4-2.

Wister Wildcats win OK Kids coach-pitch state championship

There is one OK Kids state baseball title coming to LeFlore County for 2014.
The Wister Wildcats went through undefeated to win the OK Kids Coach-Pitch State Tournament in Weatherford on Saturday, beating Mooreland 14-1 in the title game.
The other two county teams trying to win a state title this past weekend, the Panama Boomers and the Heavener Thunder, fell short in their bids for championships.

Amanda Dawn Potter, 39, of Panama died Saturday, July 19, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. Amanda was born Dec. 31, 1974, in Fort Smith to Scott and Tommie Kay (Robison) Courtney. She was a homemaker. 
Survivors include her daughters, McKalah Potter and Amberlea Potter of Clay, Ky.; mother and stepdad, Tommie Kay and David Carson of Panama; father and stepmother, Scott and Paula Courtney of Van Buren, Ark.; sisters, Saundra and Rikk Cardenas of Elk City, Misty and Stephen Beasley of Fort Smith; numerous other family members, loved ones and friends.

Frances (Ellis) Gibson
Frances (Ellis) Gibson, 98, of Wister died Friday, July 18, 2014, in Poteau. She was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Abbott, Ark. to Claud and Leafer Ellis. The family moved to Wister when Frances was a small child. She married Athel “Slim” Gibson on March 17, 1934. They were blessed with two sons. She was a homemaker until her boys started school, then became a licensed practical nurse. She retired as a surgical scrub and office nurse. Frances was a member of the Wister Nazarene Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, missionary president and taught Bible school.
