Poteau softball senior duo believe team has shot at making state Wednesday; Lady Pirates play in Class 6A Regional Tournament, with Broken Bow up first thing Wednesday morning

April 28, 2015

When the season first started in March, the perception of the Poteau Lady Pirates slow-pitch softball team was that it could possibly be a down year. However, Poteau's two seniors, center fielder Alyssa Kramer and rover Melanie Johnson, would beg to differ. Both of them like their chances to make state, which the Lady Pirates can do Wednesday by winning the Class 6A Regional Tournament in Jenks. The Lady Pirates will face Broken Bow at 11:15 a.m. after host Jenks and Tulsa Washington open the regional at 10 a.m.

Oklahoma House, Senate pass religious freedom legislation

April 23, 2015

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Legislation that protects members of the clergy who refuse to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony has been approved by the Oklahoma House and Senate.

The House voted 87-8 for the bill Wednesday while a nearly identical bill passed the Senate on a 38-5 vote. All opposing votes came from Democrats.

The bills protect clergy members and others authorized to perform weddings from being required to perform them if it conflicts with their religious beliefs. They also shield churches from being required to participate in the ceremonies.
