Oologah blanks Poteau, but junior RB sets school rushing record in defeat

When the Poteau Pirates and the Oologah Mustangs met eight years ago in the playoffs, the Mustangs built up a 35-0 lead at halftime, only to see the Pirates come back and win in overtime.
When the two teams met Friday night in the Class 4A playoff opener in Oologah, the Mustangs led 28-0 at the break, but on this night Poteau’s lack of depth hurt them. So, too, did quarterback Ben Klutts’ leg injury as the Pirates saw their season end in a 42-0 loss.

WHITESBORO — A strong third quarter broke open a close game as the Red Oak Eagles handed the Whitesboro Bulldogs their first loss of the season with a 59-48 victory Thursday night at Steve Linker Gymnasium.
With the game tied at 11 with 7:21 left before halftime, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-11 lead with 5:03 left in the first half en route to a 23-20 halftime lead.
Red Oak pulled away from Whitesboro in the third quarter, outscoring them 21-11 in the period to take a 44-31 lead into the final quarter.

WHITESBORO — The Red Oak Lady Eagles remained undefeated in the season as they flew past the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 76-36 Thursday night at Steve Linker Gymnasium.
The Lady Eagles raced out to a 25-4 lead after a period and were never headed.
Leflore 64, McCurtain 44: In McCurtain, the Lady Savages kept their perfect record intact so far this season, but it didn't come easy Thursday night.
With the game tied at 26-all at halftime, Leflore outscored McCurtain 23-7 in the third quarter to take a 49-33 lead into the final period.

Lillian Faye Antill, 88, of Spiro died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Lakeview Baptist Church in Spiro. Burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark.
Family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Owen D. Harrison, 84, of Nevada, Mo., died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, in Nevada. He was born April 4, 1930, in Poteau to Herman and Carrie (Walker) Harrison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War, and a retired captain of the Tulsa Fire Department.
Owen was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darrell Owen Harrison; a daughter, Karen Francis; and two brothers, Raymond and Bob Harrison.

Health care enrollment begins Saturday

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Thousands of Oklahomans are expected to participate in the open enrollment period under the federal Affordable Care Act beginning this weekend.

Open enrollment starts Saturday and runs until Feb. 15. Residents can enroll in the health marketplace, renew or change their plan options during this period. People interested in enrolling can go to HealthCare.gov to view premiums for 2015 without creating an account or logging in.

Oklahoma says more than 69,000 residents enrolled in the health care marketplace for 2014 plans.

Harrison, 84, of Navada, Mo., formerly of Poteau died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, in Navada.   Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2014, at the Assembly of God in Panama. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at Grace Manor Funeral Home in Poteau. Full obituary will appear in Saturday’s newspaper.

Hoy D. Mooneyham, 73, of Pocola died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday.
