Wister boys make Red Oak Eagle Classic championship semifinals; Whitesboro Bulldogs, Howe Lions eliminated

RED OAK — The Wister Wildcats won their opening-round game Thursday in the 2014 Red Oak Eagle Classic.
The ’Cats got their first victory of the season in what was their season opener, defeating the Buffalo Valley Buffaloes 7-3.
Wister played Crowder, which beat the Howe Lions 10-1 on Thursday, in one championship semifinal. The winner will play for the title at 3 p.m. Saturday, while the loser will play for third place at noon Saturday.

Wister girls beat Spiro to reach Pocola Tournament finals; championship game was scheduled Friday night

POCOLA — The Wister Lady Wildcats might have brought home a tournament championship Friday night. They were in line to do so.
The Lady Wildcats beat the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 4-3 in Thursday night’s winner’s-bracket finals.
Spiro played Heavener in Friday’s loser’s-bracket final with the winner meeting Wister. The if-game was slated for 8 p.m. Friday if needed.
The Lady Wolves won both of their consolation games, beating Stigler 9-2 and host Pocola 4-1. The Lady Indians, who took the place of the Keota Lady Lions who dropped out, beat Cameron 11-0.

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs bounced back from Tuesday’s season-opening shutout at the hands of Panama to down the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 4-2 Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the first and single runs in the next two innings for a 4-0 lead.
Panama 7, Whitesboro 0: Tuesday in Panama, Panama pitcher Hannah Goines pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Editor’s note: Nothing was reported on Panama’s Thursday home game against Quinton by press time.

Harold Wayne Taylor

August 15, 2014

Harold Wayne Taylor, 73, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 in Tulsa with his family by his side.

Harold was born Jan. 31, 1941, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Berkley N. and Flora Mae Barnes Taylor.

He grew up in Spiro. Harold joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1958 until being honorably discharged in 1962. Harold married Patsy J. Kinsey on June 23, 1962, in Panama. For most of his life, Harold worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry, retiring in 1995 from A.M.I. In his spare time, Harold enjoyed building trailers and gardening. He will be remembered best for his love for his family.

George Edward Gage Jr.

George Edward Gage Jr., 65, of Wister died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, in Wister.

George was born June 12, 1949, in Concord, N.H., to George Edward Sr. and Flora Lucille (Follansbee) Gage. He retired after working for the State of New Hampshire for more than 20 years. He was a volunteer fireman in Loudon, N.H., for 10 years. George enjoyed horseback riding and riding his Gold Wing motorcycle. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed music and playing his guitar.

Billy Powell, 67, of Sallisaw died Aug. 8, 2014, in Sallisaw. 

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at First Baptist Church in Bokoshe under the direction of Agent Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Sallisaw.

Larry D. Kable

Larry D. Kable, 45, of Bokoshe died Aug. 11, 2014, in Sallisaw.

Larry was born on April 8, 1969, in Portland, Ind. He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Kable. He was the owner and operator of Larry & Leroy's Fix It All Shop in Sallisaw. He loved his family and he enjoyed fishing, riding horses, and grilling.

Teresa Darlene Lanigan

Darlene Lanigan, 55, of Elk City died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, in a Clinton hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at First United Methodist Church in Talihina under the direction of Burkhart Funeral Service, Talihina.

Cherokee Fire Dancers deployed to California

August 15, 2014

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — Twenty Cherokee Nation Fire Dancers are being sent to California to help fight wildfires.

The tribe says the Fire Dancers were deployed Wednesday and will work up to 16-hour shifts each day to help suppress fires and to keep other fires from starting.

The firefighters will join five other Fire Dancers who left earlier this month and remain in California to help fight the fires.

The group is called up by the U.S. Forestry Department.
