Heavener cross country runners medal at Haworth Invitational

IDABEL — Several Heavener high school and junior high runners medaled in the season-opening meet, the Haworth Invitational, Monday afternoon at the Idabel Country Club.
Three Lady Wolves medaled in the high school girls division, whose runners ran a 1.3-mile course. Barbara Johnson was seventh (8:55), Iris Martinez was 17th (10:08) and Johna Enger was 19th (11:17). Brenda Macias ran an 11:56, while Ali Paxton had a 12:48, but their overall places were not available.

Tickets still remain for the Poteau Pirates’ football season opener in the Hooten’s Kickoff Classic against Alma, Ark., at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School at 7:45 p.m. next Thursday.
Tickets for adults and students cost $7 per person, while pre-schoolers will be admitted for free.
For those wishing to purchase tickets, call Poteau coach Greg Werner at (918) 839-4572 or come by the high school or football fieldhouse.

The Poteau Pirates football team will get one more shot at ironing out the kinks before playing Alma, Ark., at 7:45 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Hooten’s Classic at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside.
The Pirates will be in a four-way scrimmage with host Tahlequah, Hilldale and Wagoner Thursday night at Northeastern State University.

A six-run sixth inning propeled the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs to a 10-6 come-from-behind win over the Poteau Lady Pirates on Tuesday afternoon.
After trailing 4-0 after two innings and 6-4 entering the fifth inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored six runs in the sixth inning, aided by three of Poteau’s six errors in the frame, to take a 10-6 lead.
Howe 10, Whitesboro 7; Smithville 6, Whitesboro 2: In Whitesboro, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning en route to a 5-1 lead in the third inning.

HOWE — Cameron pitcher Dillon Jackson struck out 12 batter and threw a one-hitter as the Yellowjackets defeated the Howe Lions 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Lions Field.
Jackson allowed only a single to Howe’s Chase Blake for his only blemish on the day.
The ’Jackets scored once in the second inning, twice in the fourth inning and once in the fifth inning.
Wister 10, Buffalo Valley 2: Tuesday in Wister, Wister pitcher Scotty Gibson got his first win of the season as he threw a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

Mary Lou (Goodwin) Courtney - Area of Service Changed

Mary Lue (Goodwin) Courtney, 69, of Poteau, died Aug. 26, 2014, in Poteau.

She was born March 5, 1945, in Cameron to Herman T. and Aleen (Owen) Goodwin. She was a homemaker and retired residential property manager.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dick Wilkerson, 81, of Poteau died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2014, in Poteau.
Services are pending with Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

DEQ recommends caution on lakes, rivers and streams

During this Labor Day holiday, many Oklahomans may be planning a trip to one of the state’s lakes, rivers, or streams to enjoy swimming, boating, canoeing and other water activities. While the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) encourages Oklahomans to visit the state’s many natural water bodies, the agency reminds residents to be cautious.
