Poteau coach, QB named District 4A-4's Coach, Player of the Year for ’13; Pirate trio earn top individual honors; 12 seniors total make all-district team

When a football team plays for a state title, and wins its district along the way, that team usually has several honors come its players' way. The Poteau Pirates footbal team has that distinct honor in 2013.
After the Pirates went 12-2, won District 4A-4 and were state runners-up, 12 players and their coach were honored by the district.
Poteau second-year coach Greg Werner was named the District Coach of the Year.
Senior quarterback Jace Pitchford was named the District Player of the Year. Pitchford rushed for 1,179 yard and 13 touchdowns, while passing for 1,441 yards and 22 TDs.

Arkoma teams sweep Gans Monday night at home

ARKOMA — Santa Claus came about 36 hours early for the Arkoma High School basketball teams as they posted a pair of wins Monday night over Gans at the Arkoma Gym to celebrate Christmas.
The Lady Mustangs used a strong fourth quarter to pull away for a 76-46 win over the Lady Grizzlies, while the Mustangs did likewise as they, too, used a strong final period to down the Grizzlies 86-68.

Pirates finish runners-up in own wrestling tournament

Thanks to a strong push in the finals by the wrestlers from Greenwood (Ark.) High School, they pushed their team past the host Poteau Pirates to win the Poteau Tournament, which took place last Friday and Saturday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.

Poteau Youth Wrestling Club place five at Sapulpa Open

SAPULPA — Five members of the Poteau Youth Wrestling Club placed at Saturday's Sapulpa Open.
Two members, Jarrett Lilley and Luke Brooks, won their respective weight class titles.
Dauntay Warren and Seth Ford each came in runners-up in their respective classes, while Nate Ulmer was third in division.
Four other wrestlers, Caden Warren, Zane Hendrix, Dakota James and Mason Barcheers, also wrestled in the tournament but did not place.

Housefire on Old 112 under investigation

A chimney was all that was left marking the remains of a house that burned to the ground early Sunday.
According to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel, firefighters received a call at 12:37 a.m. about a house on fire about one and one-half miles past the old Poteau River bridge on old Oklahoma Highway 112 near the Fairview community.
Pickel said when firemen arrived the home, previously occupied by Dave W. “Zach” Cook, was engulfed in flames and was not able to be saved.

Half marathon joins Vike Hike

The annual Carl Albert State College Vike Hike 5K has a new component this year — a half marathon has been added to the event.
Both races are set for Saturday, March 29, in Poteau. 
Hali Repass, one of the event organizers, said both courses are USATF certified. The half will travel along the Poteau Scenic Bypass, with northbound lanes shut down to all traffic, then follow the traditional Vike Hike 5K course. Maps for both courses are on and at

Governor bans e-cigarettes from state property

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin issued an executive order on Monday that bans the use of electronic cigarettes and vapor devices on state property, saying the potential long-term health effects of the products are unknown.
The order applies to all land and property owned or leased by the state, including state vehicles, effective Jan. 1. The only exception is for residents of state residential facilities for veterans.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution and create a water vapor that users inhale.

Merry Christmas to you all; some holiday hoops this week

I want to wish you a Merry Christmas to you all on this Christmas Eve. As you're reading this, I either am en route to have already arrived at my Christmas destination of Enid to spend Christmas with my mother, and will return Friday morning to be present to put out Saturday's sports pages — and cover the first day of the Panama Holiday Festival.
That leads me to mention that there will be some holiday hoops this week. The Panama Holiday Festival will be Saturday and Monday. The host Razorbacks and Lady ’Backs will be joined by Spiro, Haileyville and Acorn, Ark.

WILBURTON — Six LeFlore County basketball teams came away with some hardware Friday and Saturday at the 2013 Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic when it finally ended this past weekend after it had its final three days rescheduled from earlier this month due to this month's wintry and icy weather.

STILWELL — The Poteau Pirates lost their season opener Friday night, falling 56-45 to the homestanding Stilwell Indians.
The Pirates fell behind 18-12 after a period, and they never could get over the hump. Stilwell led 32-18 at halftime and took a 48-24 lead into the final period.
Spiro 82, Muldrow 49: Friday night in Spiro, Spiro didn't break away from Muldrow until the third quarter in this battle of the Bulldogs. Spiro, leading 36-32 at halftime, outscored Muldrow 30-7 in the third period to take a 66-39 lead into the final quarter.
