It took until late Saturday, but the Carl Albert State College basketball teams finally found out who and where they will play their Monday night opening-round games in the Region II Tournament.
The Lady Vikings will entertain the Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers at 7 p.m. Monday at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Vikings will hit the road to meet the Seminole State College Trojans at 7 p.m. Monday in Seminole.
The 2013 high school golf schedule will begin for the Poteau Pirates junior varsity and the Heavener Wolves teams on Monday.
The Pirates and the Wolves will participate at the Stigler Invitaional, which will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Brier Creek Golf Course in Stigler.
This was the first baseball game of the year for both the Poteau Pirates and the Muldrow Bulldogs, and it was what you would envision it to be. With the exception of Michael Didway's one inning of pitching, the pitchers on both sides struggled finding the strike zone in Friday afternoon's opener at Carl Albert State College's Ival Goodman Field.
BYNG â€” The 2012-13 basketball season came to an end for the Spiro Bulldogs on Thursday night as they lost 81-74 to the Lexington Bulldogs in the Class 3A Area Tournament consolation quarterfinals at Byng High School's Bill Kohler Fieldhouse. The local â€™Dogs end the season at 18-9.
Kiowa Girls Make Class A State Semifinals
The Kiowa Cowgirls, featuring former Panama Lady Razorback Lauren Smith, made it to Friday night's Class A State Tournament semifinals.
The Cowgirls used a fourth-quarter rally to down the Fort Cobb-Broxton Lady Mustangs 55-47 Thursday night at Oklahoma City University.
The Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates soccer teams will open their 2013 seasons Saturday in the Sykes Invitational, which this year will be played at three different sites due to its normal site, Ben Geren Park, having its soccer field too wet on which to play.
Both teams will play back-to-back at the three sites being used this year â€” Van Buren (Ark.) High School, Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside and Greenwood (Ark.) high schools.
The Pirates will play Van Buren at 10 this morning, followed by the Lady Pirates facing Van Buren at 11 this morning. Both games will be at Van Buren.
The Mountain Gateway Sisterhood of Steel roller derby team will host Girls Rollinâ€™ In The South (GRITS) at 11 a.m. Saturday at SkateReation in Poteau. This will be the first meeting between the two leagues in Poteau since both teams were nothing but newbies, a.k.a, fresh meat.
Shelly Renee Carpenter, 44, of Spiro died Monday, Feb. 25. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.
Charley Potter Sr., 71, of Poteau died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Poteau. He was born Sept. 16, 1941, at Cameron to W.A. â€śBillâ€ť and Stellie â€śMaeâ€ť (Smith) Potter. He was a self-employed carpenter and owner of Charleyâ€™s Construction.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.
Lloyd Hale, 81, of Panama died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Lloyd was born April 3, 1931, in Bokoshe to James W. and Mollie (Poteet) Hale. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Loretta; sister, Berniece; and brothers, Haskell and Mousey.
