Late season deer hunting time is here

Christmas vacation is here for me and I am ready for some time off from work. I am even more excited to be able to pull out my Mathews and get back in a tree stand. Dan Carter and I are joining Butch Parks at our lease in Clayton.
We are planning on staying for several days and enjoy the peace and quiet of late season bow hunting. Wister baseball coach John McAlester, Brad McMillin and Kolton Lynn are going to join us for a day or two during the hunt.

Poteau wrestlers get road dual victory over Quinton; Pirates hit the road Thursday night to McAlester, then have own two-day tournament Friday, Saturday

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team made it 2-for-2 in dual victories on the young season Tuesday night, picking up a 42-34 road win over the Quinton Savages.
The Pirates (2-0) won seven matches, all by pin.
So, the Pirates will take some momentum into the rest of a busy week. Poteau will be in another road dual at 7 p.m. Thursday against the McAlester Buffaloes at Brumley Gym. The junior high dual will take place at 6 p.m.
Then, Friday and Saturday will be the Poteau Tournament at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. Action will begin at 3 p.m. Friday and resume at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Wolves won for the second straight game as they knocked off county rival Wister 54-35 in the latest battle for U.S. Highway 270 supremacy.
The Wolves jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one period and slowly increased their lead from there. Heavener led 28-17 at halftime and took a 43-27 lead into the final quarter.
Arkoma 64, Panama 47: In Arkoma, the Mustangs, who led 18-12 after a quarter, put the game away with a 16-4 second period to take a 34-16 lead at halftime.

ARKOMA — On Saturday night at Panama, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs beat the homestanding Lady Razorbacks 63-58 to win the 2013 Green Valley Conference Tournament.
The same two teams met Tuesday night at the Arkoma Gym. Again, it was the Lady Mustangs prevailing as they downed the Lady ’Backs 68-50 in a title-game rematch.
The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 19-14 lead after a quarter, but used a 17-6 second period to take control of the game to take a 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Pocola teams lose third-place games at CNT; host Talihina girls fall in seventh-place game to Sallisaw-Central

TALIHINA — It was a rough end to the three-day stay for three LeFlore County basketball teams at the 2013 Choctaw Nation Tournament on Saturday on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
Both Pocola teams suffered third-place game losses as the Lady Indians lost 45-37 to Antlers, while the Indians suffered a 56-46 setback to the Kingston Redskins.
The host Talihina Lady Golden Tigers suffered a loss to the Sallisaw-Central Lady Tigers in the first game of the day for seventh place. No final score was available, and no more information was reported.

Howe teams sweep Pocola

HOWE — Despite foul problems, the Howe Lions, thanks to a torrid fourth quarter, kept their unbeaten record intact as they beat the Pocola Indians 55-40 Monday night at the Howe Gym.
The Lady Lions handled the Lady Indians 65-34 in the first game of the night.

McCURTAIN — The Leflore Savages got their 10th win of the season Monday night, beating the homestanding McCurtain Bulldogs 61-54.
The Savages led 17-10 after a period and never lost the lead.
Leflore will be idle until 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they will play the winner of Thursday night's Howe-Cave Springs game for the Gold Bracket title of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.

McCURTAIN — Despite a slow start, the Leflore Lady Savages were able to hang on for a 53-50 road win over the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs on Monday night.
Trailing 13-4 after a period, the Lady Savages outscored the Lady Bulldogs 18-4 in the second quarter for a 22-17 halftime lead.
After McCurtain regained the lead at 34-33 at the end of the third quarter, Leflore outscored the hosts 20-16 in the final period to get the come-from-behind road win.

Donnie L. Harris found guilty in death of Kristi Ferguson

A LeFlore County jury today found Donnie L. Harris guilty of first-degree murder in the February 2012 death of 24-year-old Kristi Ferguson.
Harris was accused of splashing Ferguson with gasoline and setting her on fire. She died about a month later in a Tulsa hospital from her injuries.

Tournament champions crowned last weekend

LeFlore County basketball did rather well last weekend in tournaments. The Howe Lions and the Arkoma Mustangs won the Green Valley Conference Tournament, while the Spiro Bulldogs claimed gold in the Wilburton Tournament. As of press time, it wasn't known if the Heavener Lady Wolves won the Gary Ford Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Hartford, Ark., to give the county a fourth champion.
Poteau's girls were second at Wilburton, while Panama's girls were runners-up in the GVC.
