David Grovdahl named national innovator in emergency medical services

A lifetime of dedication to LeFlore County

For nearly four decades, a Poteau man has dedicated his life to making a positive impact on youth in need, but that era came to an end after Rick Couri’s retirement in December.
Couri, 65, has spent the past 39 years of his life working for LeFlore County Youth Services. During his time with the organization, he has had an effect not only on the children he has helped and their families, but also on a community and his co-workers.

“A Bike for Daylon” will happen May 18. Daylon is a 13-year-old with cerebral palsy who wants a bike to ride with his family.
Funds are being raised to help his parents purchase an adaptive bike for him.

The second annual Brittney Cox Memorial Golf Tournament 2-Man Scramble will take place at 8 a.m. and approximately 1 p.m. April 27 at Choctaw Country Club.
The entry fee is $135 per team, but for teams that have golf carts their fee will be $120.

M&M duo wins LeFlore County Bass Club tournament at Sardis

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its fourth tournament of the 2013 circuit Saturday at Potato Hills South on Sardis Lake.
There were 31 boats with 56 anglers who caught 35 total fish that weighed 104 pounds. The average fish weighed 2.97 pounds, and three limits were caught.
Save the world, recycle.

Poteau girls golf team wins team, individual titles at Pryor

PRYOR — Class 4A’s defending state girls golf champions, the Poteau Lady Pirates, took home all the top honors at Thursday’s Pryor Invitational.
The Lady Pirates not only won the team title with a 379, but Class 4A defending individual state champion Hannah Ward won the the top medalist honor with a 78.
In fact, two other Lady Pirates placed in the top 15. Cathleen Manlove was seventh with a 94, while Skylynn Terry was 11th with a 99.
Dallas Terry shot a 108, while Alyssa Vineyard carded a 110.

Heavener soccer boys blank Hugo, but Lady Wolves fall to Keys Lady Cougars

HEAVENER — The Heavener Wolves soccer team opened its district season Tuesday night at Harvey Stadium with a 7-0 shutout of the Hugo Buffaloes.
The news was not as good for the Lady Wolves, who suffered a 4-0 loss to the Keys (Park Hill) Lady Cougars in the first game on Tuesday. The Lady Wolves never got a shot on goal in the game.
Both teams will return to action Friday in road district games against Westville. The girls game will be at 5 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Talihina runner places twice in Beggs meet

BEGGS — Talihina senior Tara Hawkins placed in two meets in last week’s Beggs Invitational. She was fourth in both the 400-meter dash 1:04.21 and the 800-meter run (2:33.9).

Top-ranked Poteau soccer boys blank McAlester; homecoming games Friday vs. Stilwell

SAVANNA — Class 4A’s top-ranked soccer team, the Poteau Pirates, continued its winning — and dominating — ways with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over the McAlester Buffaloes.
While the girls contest was only a junior varsity one for the Lady Pirates, it was a very successful one for the local ladies as they won 5-0.
The Poteau soccer teams will celebrate homecoming Friday against Stilwell at Costner Stadium. Homecoming ceremonies will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. The girls game will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Poteau track girls fifth at Airedale Relays

ALMA, Ark. — The Poteau Lady Pirates track team placed fifth at Tuesday's Airedale Relays. The Lady Pirates scored 71 points, finishing behind four Arkansas teams — team champion Mansfield (95 points), Van Buren (88), Russellville (76.5) and host Alma (74).
The Pirates scored three points in the meet.
The Poteau track teams will return to action in the Checotah Invitational, which will begin at 10 a.m. Friday.

Wister archery team heads to national shoot; turkey season opens in much of Oklahoma

Wister High School's archery team has qualified for the national shoot next month in Louisville, Ky. Wister School is providing transportation and at least $1,000 for the trip, but it is going to cost a bit more. So, coach John McAlester and I are having some fundraisers to help with the expenses.
The team will sell barbecue baskets at the Wister Baseball Invitational Tournament on Friday. On Sunday, the team will have a pie auction at the Wister cafeteria at 2 p.m. Also, the archery team will have a rib sale on April 20 with orders due Sunday.
