Chickasaw governor hopeful on water lawsuit talks

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The governor of one of Oklahoma's largest Native American tribes says he is hopeful about ongoing negotiations with the state over lawsuits involving the tribes' legal rights to water in their historic territories in southeast Oklahoma.

When asked Wednesday about ongoing negotiations with state officials over the lawsuit involving the Chickasaw and Choctaw nations, Chickasaw Gov. Bill Anoatubby said: "I have hope for the future."

Jailbirds seeking bail for MDA

Some members of the Poteau area business community have been arrested today for having big hearts.
They are volunteering to be “arrested and serve time” in a mock jail at Holiday Inn Express to raise money for the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

More than $4.5 million approved in disaster recovery

OKLAHOMA CITY – More than $4.5 million has already been approved in federal funding for debris clearance and emergency protective measures in Oklahoma following the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that occurred from May 18 – June 2, 2013.
Of the total, $4.1 million covers eligible debris removal costs under a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Alternative Procedures Pilot Program. The accelerated debris removal program was initiated in Oklahoma following the devastating spring storms.

Poteau golf coach, partner win Spider Webb Invitational

Poteau Lady Pirates golf coach Randall Wheat and Jonathon Spikes won the championship flight of the 2013 Spider Webb Invitational, which took place this past weekend at Choctaw Country Club. The duo shot a 61-67—128, beating the team of Damian Scott and Kevin Stann (65-65—130) — who won a scorecard playoff against Jason May and Kale Holton (65-65—130) for second place.

Champions crowned in Poteau Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament

Four two-golfer teams were parts of two championships at the Poteau Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, which took place June 24 at Choctaw Country Club.
Dr. Bill Willis and Mike Huggins, along with Paul Quirk and Johnny Baker were champions in first flight. Dr. Douglas Duke and Graham Dunn along with Ron and Don Killion were second. The duos of Craig Hall-Clark Summers and SueAnn Loggains-Ryan Adams were third.

There's a new bull in town

Many have seen the two decorated bulls in town. One on the north end by the Cavanal Scenic Expressway ramp and the other on the south side of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. Well the newest of many to come has found its home.
The Central National Bank bull was delivered Tuesday afternoon.
Delivery people said the next bull to be unveiled belongs to JoB Construction.

Talihina to hold special election

July 16, 2013

Candidates for two seats on the Talihina Board of Trustees will begin filing their declarations of candidacy at 8 a.m. Monday at the LeFlore County Election Board.
The filing period will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele.
Candidates will file for a four-year term on the board and a two-year unexpired term.
The nonpartisan special municipal election will be held Sept. 10, Steele said.
