Josee Nathalie McGowen, 85, of Poteau died Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Josee was born April 28, 1928 in Brussels, Belgium, to Fabien and Mary Julia (Van den Broeck) Dricot. She was a homemaker. Josee was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; two children, Patricia Kay McGowen and Allen Lee McGowen; and one sister, Amandine.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Judith, Carol, Linda, Virginia, Janette, Barbara, Patti, Greg, Gene, John and James.

Prosecutors stress cooperation across state lines

Practicing in a community that borders another state is a cause for investigators and prosecutors to work hand-in-hand with out-of-state agencies.
In an effort to increase communication and working relationships across the invisible boundaries, the Oklahoma District Attorneys Council and the Arkansas Prosecuting Attorneys Association began joint conference meetings a few years ago. On Monday, prosecutors gathered in Fort Smith, Ark., to continue the growing trend of working hand-in-hand with cases that span both sides of the border.

Professional women's workshop Aug. 2

After attending “The Polished Professional: Secrets to Passion, Purpose and Style,” the professional woman will have more confidence to step into the boardroom, retail store, classroom or office to tackle each job with more enthusiasm.
This workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.

Educators experience interactive training seminar

Forty-four Poteau Primary School and Poteau Upper Elementary School teachers participated in Payne Education Center Training during the last week of June.
Poteau Upper Elementary School hosted the week-long training sessions for Poteau teachers and teachers from surrounding areas.

Lady Vikings' Brown takes long-range shooting to Campbell

Carl Albert State College Lady Viking D. Brown,  a 5-3 sophomore shooting/point guard from Norman signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the next two years with Campbell University, which is an NCAA Division I school. The Camels are a member of the Big South Conference, located in Buies Creek, N.C.
CASC women's coach Jeff Tadtman is excited for Brown to get the opportunity to play at the Division I level.

Adams, Leatherwood win tournament on Wister Lake

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its third open bass tournament of 2013 on Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 14 boats filled with anglers who caught a combined 54 fish that weighed 113.98 pounds. Each fish averaged 2.11 pounds, and 10 limits were caught.
Brian “Cuts Like a Knife” Adams and Dwayne Leatherwood won the tournament as they hauled in 12.21 pounds of fish to earn $325. Among the fish they caught was Adams' big bass winner that weighed 5.54 pounds to earn him an extra $130.

Health Department hosts grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony

The LeFlore County Health Department hosted several members of the community Thursday during their grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony.
Food, refreshments and cake were available for visitors. The open house was held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at noon.

LYCS to celebrate 39 years

LeFlore County Youth Services marked 39 years of service on Monday.
Board and staff members and retired director Rick Couri gathered to celebrate the occasion as well as the agency's fourth CARF accreditation. The accreditation is for three years.
LCYS Inc. was founded in 1974 after a steering committee was put together in 1973 to provide an alternative to jail for teens.
As a result of their work, the organization became reality as a not-for-profit agency and first funding started in July 1974.
