Arkoma, Whitesboro teams open EOSC Classic with wins; locals to face each today in semifinals

WILBURTON — LeFlore County did rather well on opening day of Blue Bracket play in the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic on Monday.
At the Wilburton High School Gym, both Arkoma teams and the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs posted victories, while the Bulldogs did so at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.
The Mustangs handled the McCurtain Bulldogs 69-56, while the Lady Mustangs were too much for the Haileyville Lady Warriors in a 64-18 victory in both locals' season openers.
The ’Dogs routed the Panola Bearcats 58-22, while the Lady Bulldogs handled the Pittsburg Lady Panthers 46-33.

After Thanksgiving break, it's the first of two straight tournament weeks happening

Now that the Thanksgiving break is over, it's basketball hot and heavy for the next two weeks.
This week will be the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic that will feature Arkoma, Howe, Leflore and Whitesboro.
Also, the Heavener teams will be in the Gary Ford Invitational in Hartford, Ark., all week, while the Wister squads will be in the Pick and Shovel Classic in Hartshorne.
At week's end, the Poteau High School basketball teams will get their seasons underway in the McAlester Tournament that will be Thursday through Saturday at the Southeast Expo Center on the west side of town.

Pocola basketball teams will open season tonight on road vs. Stigler

The 2013-14 basketball seasons will begin for the Pocola Lady Indians and Indians tonight as they hit the road to face Stigler. The Lady Indians will play at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Indians at 8 p.m.
The Lady Indians were 8-15 a season ago and return four of their five starters from that team.
The Indians were 16-10 last year, and they return six players who saw lots of playing time on that team.

Panama teen succumbs to rifle wound

A Panama high school teen died late Sunday from injuries suffered when he was shot accidentally by a 14-year-old friend while returning from a hunting trip.
According to Panama Police Chief John Whiteaker, Ryan Self, 16, of Panama was walking along the road with his friend when the accidental shooting occurred about 2 p.m. Nov. 23.
According to police reports, Ryan’s friend tripped and fell causing the .243-caliber rifle to discharge, striking Ryan in the neck.

Former Poteau resident killed in head-on crash

A former Poteau woman died Sunday in a head-on collision near Alma, Ark., according to Arkansas State Police.
Joyce Mirus, 51, of Mulberry, Ark., died at the scene of the accident on U.S. 71 in Crawford County, according to the ASP report.

CASC women split games at Wells Fargo Classic; Lady Vikings upset 17th-ranked Arizona Western, welcome NEO Lady Norse to town tonight

Getting defensive stops and making free throws late in the game were both keys for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 51-50 win over host  Arizona Western, which was ranked 17th in the nation, in the second and final day of the Wells Fargo Classic on Saturday.
The Lady Vikings' inability to make plays down the stretch proved to be the difference for Cochise College in its 72-64 win over the Lady Vikings on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Vikings will return to action tonight as they will entertain Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 6 p.m. at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.

Carl Albert men suffer two losses in Thanksgiving Classic; Vikings entertain NEO tonight

Mairega Clark's double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds weren't enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their 93-73 loss to Clarendon (Texas) College in the second and final day of the Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday night in Plano, Texas.
Behind 52.9-percent shooting from the field and a 57-29 second half, Midland, Texas, powered past the Vikings 97-56 in the first game of the Classic on Friday night.
The Vikings will return home tonight to entertain the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Norsemen at 8 p.m. at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.

Joyce Mirus, 51, of Mulberry, Ark., died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 in Alma, Ark. Joyce was born March 26, 1962, in Oklahoma City to Gerald and Cleo Ruth (Cravins) Wilson. Joyce graduated from Poteau High School and spent most of her life there. She worked at Gerber and also at Whirlpool for 25 years. Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, Cleo; sister, Laura Wilson; and grandparents, Howard and Bertha Wilson, Mattie Moore and Otto Cravins.

Poteau Pirates going to state title game; Poteau knocks off OKC Douglass in Saturday afternoon's semifinals

McALESTER — If the Poteau Pirates football team was going to advance to the Class 4A state championship game, senior quarterback Jace Pitchford would be in the middle of it somewhere — and he was.

State semifinals a Trojan war for Pirates this afternoon; Poteau meets OKC Douglass in McAlester for right to play for state title on Friday (UPDATE WITH CORRECT DIRECTIONS TO STADIUM)

Although the Trojan War was centuries ago, the Poteau Pirates football team will be in one this afternoon in the Class 4A state semifinals.
The Pirates (11-1) will face the Oklahoma City Douglass Trojans (11-1) at 1:30 this afternoon at McAlester's Hook Eales Stadium. The winner will meet the victor of this weekend's other state semifinal between Anadarko and Wagoner in the state championship game on Friday at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.
