Nichols to face trial in Neff slaying

LeFlore County Special Judge Jeff Singer ordered Raymond Larry Nichols, 60, of Cameron to face trial for first-degree murder in the 2009 shooting death of local bar owner Joe Neff.
Of the multiple witnesses called by the state during a preliminary hearing Wednesday, most were police officers involved in the investigation or were present when Oklahoma Highway Patrol dive team recovered a gun that they believed to be the alleged murder weapon from the same strip pit near Pocola where Neff’s body had been found in 2009.

Vet assured of final resting place; fundraiser meets goal to cover funeral home expenses

Community members came together Tuesday to ensure a final resting place for an area veteran who died recently.
Bill Sanders, pastor of Greenhill Church in Cameron, took on the task of fundraising when he learned that the family of Army veteran James Webb was unable to pay a Siloam Springs funeral home and Webb’s body remained at the business.
An Indian taco sale in the Poteau Daily News parking lot Tuesday — plus numerous cash donations — raised about $1,500. Sanders said that would be enough to pay the cremation expenses and purchase a headstone for Webb.

School board races set in 5 districts

February’s school Board elections began taking shape Wednesday as candidates filed to run for offices at the LeFlore County Election Board offices. Of the 17 districts holding elections, five districts — Bokoshe, Panama, Poteau, Whitesboro and Wister — have candidates opposing each other for the same office.

NEO teams take pair from Carl Albert squads; CASC teams entertain Seminole State Thursday night

Katrell Henry's 24 points weren't enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings as a run late in the second half sent the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Golden Norsemen past the Vikings 87-77 Tuesday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A 25-10 run by the Lady Vikings cut their deficit to 14 points with 8:25 left in the second half. However, that was as close as they got in their 82-63 loss to the NEO Lady Norse in Tuesday night's first game.

Howe teams, Leflore Savages post Gold Bracket wins in EOSC Classic on Tuesday; Lady Savages lose; Arkoma, Whitesboro teams played Wednesday in Blue Bracket semifinals

WILBURTON — The Howe High School basketball teams and the Leflore Savages posted wins in Gold Bracket opening-round games Tuesday in the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic.
At EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse, the Lions routed the Battiest Panthers 61-21, while the Savages handled the Gans Grizzlies 66-41.

Football playoff games canceled until next week; Poteau's state title game Dec. 14 at OSU; Talihina's semifinal contest Dec. 13 at Durant

Both the Poteau Pirates and the Talihina Golden Tigers will have to wait a while longer before hitting the gridiron — at least in a game situation.
The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association announced Wednesday afternoon that all high school football playoff games scheduled for the end of this week are going to be canceled and rescheduled for the following week due to the incoming wintry weather — expected to hit Thursday night.

Poteau girls open season against Valliant on Thursday in SE Oklahoma Shootout; Lady Pirate senior forward among Vype magazine's Top 100 girls players to watch this upcoming season

Editor's note — Due to the Poteau High School football team making it to the Class 4A state title game, and having some of its players going to play on the high school basketball team, the Pirates will wait to begin their basketball season in next week's Wilburton Tournament at this point. Their season-preview story is scheduled to appear next week.
The Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team is coming off an 18-9 season last year, including winning the 2013 LeFlore County Tournament and winning their third straight district title.

Poteau Wrestling Club members place in weekend tournaments

Several Poteau Youth Wrestling Club members placed in a pair of weekend tournaments.
At the Bixby Open, Seth Ford won his weight class title, Luke Brooks was runner-up, Natham Ulmer third and Dakota James were fourth in the afternoon session. Ulmer and Jarrett Lilley were third in Division V action in the morning session. Remington Reed participated but did not place.
Zack Broom was runner-up at 80 pounds in Division III in the Jenks Tournament, while sister, Ashley, participated at 58 pounds in Division III but did not place.

Searchers find boy, 3, near school

December 3, 2013

A 3-year-old boy wandered away from Poteau Primary Elementary School, causing several tense minutes for police and school employees Tuesday morning.
The child was found after about 25 minutes on Redbud Lane, Superintendent Don Sjoberg said.
The preschool pupil apparently slipped through a fence during recess about 9 a.m., Sjoberg said.

Weather warning issued for travelers

With temperatures expected to fall as low as 13 degrees this weekend, the National Weather Service in Norman has issued a Winter Storm Watch for LeFlore, Pushmataha and Choctaw counties. Sebastian county in Arkansas is also under watch.
The storm is expected to arrive Thursday, with more than a quarter inch of ice likely and a low temperature of 28 degrees. Friday night’s low temperature is projected at 13 degrees.
