Talihina runner places twice in Beggs meet

BEGGS — Talihina senior Tara Hawkins placed in two meets in last week’s Beggs Invitational. She was fourth in both the 400-meter dash 1:04.21 and the 800-meter run (2:33.9).

Top-ranked Poteau soccer boys blank McAlester; homecoming games Friday vs. Stilwell

SAVANNA — Class 4A’s top-ranked soccer team, the Poteau Pirates, continued its winning — and dominating — ways with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over the McAlester Buffaloes.
While the girls contest was only a junior varsity one for the Lady Pirates, it was a very successful one for the local ladies as they won 5-0.
The Poteau soccer teams will celebrate homecoming Friday against Stilwell at Costner Stadium. Homecoming ceremonies will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. The girls game will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Poteau track girls fifth at Airedale Relays

ALMA, Ark. — The Poteau Lady Pirates track team placed fifth at Tuesday's Airedale Relays. The Lady Pirates scored 71 points, finishing behind four Arkansas teams — team champion Mansfield (95 points), Van Buren (88), Russellville (76.5) and host Alma (74).
The Pirates scored three points in the meet.
The Poteau track teams will return to action in the Checotah Invitational, which will begin at 10 a.m. Friday.

Wister archery team heads to national shoot; turkey season opens in much of Oklahoma

Wister High School's archery team has qualified for the national shoot next month in Louisville, Ky. Wister School is providing transportation and at least $1,000 for the trip, but it is going to cost a bit more. So, coach John McAlester and I are having some fundraisers to help with the expenses.
The team will sell barbecue baskets at the Wister Baseball Invitational Tournament on Friday. On Sunday, the team will have a pie auction at the Wister cafeteria at 2 p.m. Also, the archery team will have a rib sale on April 20 with orders due Sunday.

Multiple injuries in head-on collision in Howe

A head-on collision in Howe at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning has resulted in several people injured.
Witness reports say an SUV crossed the center line of U.S. Highway 59 striking a semi-tractor trailer head on.
Moments after the impact, witnesses say the semi exploded.
Emergency crews from Howe Fire and Police, LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services, Tulsa Life Flight and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were on scene.
Initial reports say three people were injured in the accident. Two people were flown from the scene by medical helicopter.

Poteau Lady Pirates beat Pocola to win county title

Once again, the Poteau Lady Pirates earned the title of LeFlore County’s queens of the softball diamond.
The Lady Pirates defeated the Pocola Lady Indians 7-1 in Tuesday night’s title game of the 2013 LeFlore County Slow-Pitch Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
It was a rougher go for the Lady Pirates in the winner’s bracket final earlier, having to rally past the Lady Indians 4-2.
The Lady Indians reached the title game by winning the loser’s bracket final 9-4 over Wister, which eliminated Panama 5-4 in the consolation semifinal contest.

SALLISAW — The Poteau Pirates got closer to the 20-win plateau as they picked up an 11-4 road win over the Sallisaw Black Diamonds on Tuesday.
Wister 4, Talihina 2, 8 inn.: Tuesday in Talihina, Tyler Gibson's two-run home run in the sixth inning tied the game at 2, then back-to-back RBI singles by Austin Vanhook and Corey Bullard in the eighth inning capped the comeback for the Wildcats.
Whitesboro 15, Clayton 7, 6 inn.: Tuesday in Whitesboro, this became a battle of Bulldogs because Whitesboro's original opponent, Eagletown, does not have enough players for a team.

Carl Albert baseball team splits Tuesday twinbill with Arkansas Baptist; Vikings, whose home games today with Murray State moved Friday afternoon, go 1-3 in road weekend series against Western (UPDATED)

It has been a busy few days for the Carl Albert State College baseball team, which played six games in four days.
On Tuesday in Arkadelphia, Ark., the Vikings split a doubleheader against Arkansas Baptist, winning the nightcap 16-2 after losing the opener 7-6.

Poteau Chamber of Commerce continues moving forward

The Poteau Chamber of Commerce has been serving business and the community since 1912.

Officials at the chamber office like to say that they are a one-stop center for information on businesses, events, area attractions, maps, phone books, rental lists, industry lists, state information and statistics.
Karen Wages is the executive director; Shannon delaCruz serves as administrative assistant-events coordinator; and Patty Curry is the accounts manager.
