Sophomore running back had a hold on Poteau's win over Clinton; send off, caravan slated for Saturday

November 29, 2013

What Poteau sophomore runinng back Roger Barcheers has done his first two years has been rather awesome, especially since he was the Freshman of the Year on the 2012 All-Arklahoma Football Team.
However, Barcheers was in the spotlight, somewhat that is, for his ability to hold the ball for Poteau senior place-kicker Jace Pitchford. Thanks to the right hold, Pitchford kicked the game-winning field goal with four seconds left to lift the Pirates to a 10-7 Class 4A state quarterfinal victory over defending state champion Clinton at Costner Stadium.

Talihina Golden Tigers get state quarterfinal rematch with Cashion ’Cats tonight

November 29, 2013

Last year at this time, the Talihina Golden Tigers football team was preparing to meet the Cashion Wildcats in the Class A state quarterfinals at Doc Robinson Stadium. The ‘Cats came to “The Pit” and left 43-24 victors to make the state semifinals.
A year later, in the same spot of the Class A playoffs, the same two teams will do battle as the Golden Tigers (12-0) will travel to meet the Wildcats (10-2) at 7:30 tonight in Cashion.

Gun season is in full swing; several local hunters had successful outings

November 27, 2013

The online deer check station has been a hotspot this year. The numbers are looking good — a lot of venison on the table all across the state.
Here’s what has been checked as of Wednesday morning: 56,471 deer, 176 turkey and 42 elk. This year, my family has actually contributed to that number early. My wife, Paula, kept telling me that I sure went out a bunch and never brought home a deer. This year I’ve gotten one, and so has Cash and Koby.

OKC Douglass Trojans up next for Poteau in Class 4A state semifinals; Thursday's practice open to public; send off, caravan slated for Saturday morning

November 26, 2013

I think Friday night's Class 4A state quarterfinal game the Poteau Pirates played against the defending state champion Clinton Red Tornadoes had to be among the best defensive games the Pirates have ever played. The Pirates held the Red Tornadoes to only three first downs in the game, and two of those came on long hail Mary passes. The defending state champs, who are considered to be an outstanding rushing offense, made only 60 yards rushing.

November 26, 2013

Five double-figure scorers and good defensive pressure proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 85-78 win over the Redlands Community College Lady Cougars on Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Behind constant defensive pressure, the Cougars rolled past the Vikings for a 95-72 win in the second game of Monday night's Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
