The Talihina Golden Tigers dismantled the Poteau Pirates by the score of 16-8 Friday afternoon at Town Creek Park.

Amos ‘Aurbie’ Humphries

Amos “Aurbie” Humphries, 87, of Monroe died Friday, March 15, 2013, in Poteau. Aurbie was born June 13, 1925, in Gilmore to Samuel Green and Lillie A. (Goodin) Humphries. He was a rancher. Aurbie was preceded in death by his wife, Jewellene (Harp) Humphries.

Friday's High School Softball Roundup

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team entered Spring Break on a high note with a 14-2 rout of the Wilburton Lady Diggers on Friday afternoon at home.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning, then added eight runs in the second inning and two runs in the third to get the game to run-rule status.
Heavener 6, Smithville 1: In Smithville, the Lady Wolves clawed their way to a 5-0 lead in the first inning to take control of the game.
Whitesboro 15, Clayton 11: In Clayton, in the battle of Lady Bulldogs, Whitesboro broke an 11-all tie with four runs in the seventh inning.

Lonnie L. Pickering

Lonnie L. Pickering, 81, of Bokoshe died Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Lonnie was born July 12, 1931, in Cameron to Floyd and Dile (Archey) Pickering. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He worked for Felt Mills in Kansas City, Mo. Lonnie attended Calvary Assembly of God in Poteau. 

CASC takes first two of three games Southwestern College

The Carl Albert State College baseball team took the first two of three games in a three-day, five-game series with Southwestern Community College, Iowa, at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings took a 11-4 win in the third game, which was started Sunday afternoon and ended Monday afternoon after being suspended by rain on Sunday.
On Saturday, the teams split, with the Vikings taking the opener 4-1 but losing the nightcap 6-5.
The two teams were slated to play a single game Monday after completing Sunday's suspended game.

PBA Talent Contest looking for performers

Panama Businesses and Associates is looking to showcase local performers during its second annual talent contest.
The organization will hold the PBA Talent Contest at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in the Panama Elementary School cafeteria.
The contest is open to all ages and talent categories including singing, dance, comedy, magic, etc. There will be three age divisions: 3-12 years old, 13-17 years old, and 18 and older. Winners will receive cash prizes and a plaque provided by AES Shady Point and Panama Hardware.

James Haskin files notice to appeal conviction

James Haskin Jr., 61, of Monroe, has filed a notice to appeal his sentence of more than two centuries after being convicted for sex crimes against his children.
Haskin was convicted by a jury on nine counts of child neglect and three counts of child sexual abuse.
In February, District Judge Jon Sullivan followed the jury's suggested sentencing and gave Haskin 245 years in prison.

Former OU quarterback Steve Davis died in Indiana plane crash

AP- Former Oklahoma quarterback Steve Davis was among two victims in a plane crash Sunday in South Bend, Ind. A South Bend television station confirmed the death with the cororner.
Two persons survived the crash and are hospitalized. A woman on the ground was injured. The second victim has not been identified.
Davis, 60, was best known as the Sooners’ quarterback from 1973-75. During that span OU went 32-1-1 and claimed back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975. His 32 wins were a program record until it was surpassed this past season by Landry Jones.

Poteau soccer teams split in home openers with Mena, Ark.

The Poteau High School soccer teams split their home openers with Mena, Ark., Thursday at Costner Stadium.
The Pirates blanked the Bearcats 9-0, but the Lady Pirates suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands, or feet rather, of the Lady Bearcats.
After taking Spring Break week off, the Poteau teams will return to action March 26 against Van Buren, Ark., at Costner Stadium.
The girls contest will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7 p.m.

Heavener soccer teams get home victories over McAlester

HEAVENER — The Heavener High School soccer teams will enter Spring Break on a high note as they swept home games Thursday night from McAlester at Harvey Stadium.
The Lady Wolves had to go to another shootout, but outlasted the Lady Buffaloes 3-2. The Wolves blanked the Buffaloes 6-0.
The Heavener teams will be idle until after the break. The Lady Wolves will play at 7 p.m. March 26 on the road against Porter Consolidated. Then, both teams will return to the field for the Stilwell Tournament, which will take place March 28-29.
