Separate accidents claim the lives of two county men

Two men were killed Wednesday afternoon in separate motorcycle accidents that occurred at about the same time. One accident was south of Hodgen and the other in Poteau.
A Heavener man was killed in a motorcycle accident Wednesday afternoon when another vehicle struck him.
Rick Ford, 56, of Heavener, was driving a 2007 Yamaha Motorcycle north on U.S. Highway 59 near Stapp Zoe at about 5:15 p.m. when the accident occurred.

Local golfers place in 2013 OK Junior Optimist Tournament on Wednesday; Wards qualify for Junior National Optimist Tournament next month in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

TULSA — Three local golfers competed in the 2013 Oklahoma Junior Optimist Tournament on Wednesday at Page Belcher Golf Course.
Poteau's Ryan Ward won his age division title with a 71, while Cameron Yellowjacket golfer Kody Whitehead was third at 76.
Ward's sister, Hannah — the two-time Class 4A state champion — tied for first place in her division with a 71, but lost the playoff to end up as runner-up.
Both Wards qualified for the Junior National Optimist Tournament, which will be July 25-29 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

It is about to heat up

The nice weather we have been having since school got out is about to end. Unfortunately, it looks like there are 100-degree temps in our near future.

With all the rain, our summer baseball teams have been having a hard time getting ball games played. It seems to come a downpour on game days — or there are church and basketball camps taking place.
However, baseball is about to kick in hard and fast. I have several games scheduled for the next two weeks. It's a good thing because those boys are itching for some action.

Peggy Jean Frye

Retired Lt. Col. Peggy Jean Frye, 72, of Pocola, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Peggy was born Nov. 16, 1940, in Yoestown, Ark. to Leonard and May Dell (Spradley) Gregory. Peggy was a member of Cornerstone Free Will Baptist Church of Roland. Peggy graduated from Van Buren High School in 1959, Sparks School of Nursing R.N. Program in 1962 and completed her BSN in 1987 from Saint Joseph’s College. She retired as nursing coordinator at LeFlore County Health Department.

Dissent posted over Okla. 'rain god' license plate

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal appeals court has republished an order authorizing a challenge to Oklahoma's "rain god" license plate after failing to provide a dissenting opinion.

The new order published Wednesday still reinstates Keith Cressman's claim that plates featuring Allan Houser's "Sacred Rain Arrow" sculpture are an affront to his Christian beliefs, but adds a dissent by Circuit Judge Paul J. Kelly Jr.
