Poteau soccer boys defeat Oologah in state quarterfinals

May 7, 2013

OOLOGAH — The past two trips the Poteau Pirates soccer team made to Oologah, both resulted in victories — but both wins came by a single goal, and both victories came late in the second half.
In Friday night’s Class 4A state quarterfinal game, the Pirates came out with focus and resolve and bridled the Mustangs.
The Pirates scored eight minutes into the game and never pulled back on the reins as they won by the score of 6-2. to put the top-ranked Pirates (14-1) into the state semifinals against the Bethany Bronchos at 7 tonight at Costner Stadium.

This is a good week to be a Pirate

May 7, 2013

The Poteau soccer team’s domination of Oologah in the Class 4A state quarterfinals has set the Pirates up for perhaps the biggest sporting event in Poteau High School sports history — playing a state semifinal game at Costner Stadium. I believe, that unless one of the 1950s football teams played a semifinal game in Poteau, that this will be a first.
In my tenure as statistician and writer in covering the Poteau Pirates football team, it played in semifinal games at Seminole, Putnam City, Tulsa Union and Choctaw twice.

Poteau ends the season at 29-9, but did set the record for wins in a season despite losing Monday's regional final.
