Oklahoma to withdraw from testing group

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma is backing out of a testing consortium to work with another company to develop its own standardized tests for the 2014-2015 school year, State Superintendent Janet Barresi said this week.

Barresi said the decision to withdraw from the multistate group — called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers — was made after teachers and parents voiced concerns about the extra hours of test taking that would be involved with it.

Okla. unemployment rate climbs in all 77 counties

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma labor officials say the state's unemployment rate rose in every one of its 77 counties in May, a trend they say is not uncommon for the month.

Figures released on Tuesday show Sequoyah County in southeast Oklahoma had the highest unemployment rate of 9 percent in May, up from 8.2 percent in April. The lowest unemployment rate was in Roger Mills County in western Oklahoma at 2.2 percent, which was an increase from 1.8 percent in April.

Cleo L. Bowen

Cleo L. Bowen, 91, of Poteau died Monday, July 1, 2013, in Pocola.
Cleo was born May 29, 1922, to Sam and Donnie (Tolbert) McElhaney. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Poteau. Cleo was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Omer Bowen; son, Cleave Bowen; brother, Oscar McElhaney; sisters, Norma Flippo, Zola Hendrix, and Veda McElhaney.

Wayne ‘Spider’ Webb

Wayne “Spider” Webb, 73, of Poteau died Sunday, June 30, 2013. Spider was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Tarby Community to John D. and Ruth (Sherfield) Webb. He was owner/operator of Spider Webb Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Dealership until 2003 and Spider Webb Farm Implements in Poteau and Fort Smith, currently the John Deere dealership. Spider was a veteran of the Oklahoma National Guard. He was an avid supporter of the community and contributed to many causes throughout the area over the years, including his personal favorite, the LeFlore County Youth Services Angel Tree.

Entry fee is $175 per team. Deadline for entry is 6 p.m. July 10.
