Sixth-grade Bandits have second straight undefeated season, beat UCA for title; third-graders lose heart-breaking title game to Immaculate Catholic

November 13, 2013

GREENWOOD, Ark. — For the second straight season, the sixth-grade Poteau Bandit League football team went through undefeated at 10-0 — as the team did so a season ago as fifth-graders going 9-0. However, this time it took a late score, and a bit of trickery, to get the second title.
Mason Barcheers ran for a 6-yard touchdown and Wade Hall kicked the conversion with 1:32 left in the game as the sixth-graders defeated Union Christian Academy from Fort Smith, Ark., 14-6 Saturday afternoon to win the Bandit Bowl.

November 13, 2013

Technically, the Poteau Pirates are tri-champions of District 4A-4 with Tulsa Cascia Hall and Sallisaw. The Pirates got a big boost from one of their archrivals, the Black Diamonds, on Friday night. Their win over Fort Gibson threw the race into a three-way tie. The Pirates had the tie breaker due to district points as they outdistanced Cascia Hall and Sallisaw, who finished as the second- and third-seeded teams, respectfully.
Thursday night, the Pirates traveled to S.E. Williams Stadium in Tulsa, where they faced the Tulsa Rogers Ropers.

Chamber contract, bids discussed during meeting

November 12, 2013

Two decisions facing the Poteau Chamber Board of Directors remained in limbo after their regular monthly meeting Tuesday.
A recent offer by the City of Poteau to enter into contract with the chamber, which would take over management of the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center, was somewhat resolved but still on hold after action by the board. Questions about the legalities of the agreement — such as any impact the partnership might make upon the chamber's 501(C)6 tax status — needed to be answered after the previous meeting.

Wasn't pretty, but OSU routs Kansas; 1988 team honored; Barry Sanders, Trace Adkins in the house on Saturday

November 12, 2013

STILLWATER — Saturday afternoon's game at Boone Pickens Stadium had the phrase “trap game” written all over it. The weekend before, the Oklahoma State Cowboys won a big road Big 12 game against Texas Tech. This upcoming weekend is a road game at Texas, followed by a home game Nov. 23 against league-leading Baylor.
So, it might have been understandable that in Saturday's 42-6 victory, the Pokes (8-1 overall, 5-1 in Big 12 play) may have looked a bit lethargic in beating the Kansas Jayhawks (2-7, 0-6).
