Buccaneer Basketball registration has begun. Registration forms can be picked up at Poteau City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Cost to register is $25 per player and deadline to enter is Friday. Anyone interested in coaching a team needs to contact Billy Bond at (918) 647-1939. The draft will be today.
Also, coaches are needed for some of the league's teams. Four coaches are needed for girls teams in the first-second grade division and the fifth-sixth grade division.

Unemployment rate drops in LeFlore County

The majority of Oklahoma reported lowered unemployment rates during August, LeFlore County included.
According to a report by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, LeFlore County has been ranked 74 out of Oklahoma's 77 counties in terms of unemployment for August. Only three other counties reported a worse unemployment rate than LeFlore County with Latimer County holding the highest rate across the state.

Heavener cross country runners see season end at regional meet

HENRYETTA — The Heavener High School cross country teams saw their seasons come to an end at Saturday's Class 3A Regional Meet as neither the teams nor individuals qualified for this weekend's state meet at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center in Shawnee.
The Lady Wolves had only two individuals as Gloriann Staines was 61st (16:37) and Brenda Macias was 84th (19:56).
The cut-off mark for state-meet qualification was around 13:30.

Might be time for OSU to put Walsh back on the Chelf; OSU beats TCU to make it happy homecoming

STILLWATER — It was a happy homecoming for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who beat the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 24-10 Saturday in front of a record-setting crowd of 59,638 at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Still, the offense for the Cowboys (5-1 overall, 2-1 in Big 12 play) is sputtering. It most certainly did in the opening quarter as starting quarterback J.W. Walsh threw two interceptions — granted one happened as he was hit while making his throw.

Dual-wheeled duo makes debut

The Poteau Police Department recently announced the formation of a mountain bike patrol unit to be used during events and other crowded happenings. During the Balloon Fest, the dual-wheeled duo of Brandon Richie and Billy Hooper helped with crowd and traffic control during the units first official day of action.

Mud pits a big hit at festival

A large crowd lined the sides of the mud pits Saturday during the mud races. The mud races were one of many entertainment events held during the weekend.
