Fall hunting season is near: Watch out for snakes

September 19, 2013

The snakes are on the move right now. Oklahoma’s western diamondback rattlesnakes start making moves toward community dens. They generally seek out a cave or rocky recess where they will hibernate for the winter.
Just last week, the mom of one of my ball players got bit by one of those poisonous slithering creatures; she never saw it, either, but she sure felt the bite afterward.
She spent several hours at the emergency room.

Poteau, Panama girls make LCT winner's-bracket finals; Lady Pirate ace throws second perfect game of tournament, which will crown county champ Thursday night

September 18, 2013

PANAMA — The Poteau Lady Pirates and the Panama Lady Razorbacks are the two lone undefeated teams in the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. They will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday to decide which team will be the first to reach Thursday night's 7:30 p.m. title game.
The Lady Pirates blanked the Wister Lady Wildcats 2-0 in one of Tuesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals, while the Lady ’Backs shut out their archrivals, the Pocola Lady Indians, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Poteau Pirates hit the road Thursday night to meet Tulsa Webster; Game will kick off at 7 p.m., not 7:30 p.m.

September 18, 2013

The good news is the Poteau Pirates footbal team is 2-0, and that's because of a pair of dramatic wins — the last one being Friday night at Costner Stadium in a thrilling 43-40 come-from-behind victory over the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers.
“We've proven we can come back, so we can just stop that now — and play some football, and not have to worry about coming from behind any more,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “But we did show a lot of heart Friday night, but we need to get after it early and quit getting so far behind.”

Tuesday's High School Baseball Roundup

HOWE — Howe pitcher James Hill threw a no-hitter as the Lions clawed the Kinta Eagles 13-0 in five innings Tuesday afternoon at Lions Field.
Hill struck out five batters in the no-hitter.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead after an inning and never looked back.
Cameron 7, Red Oak 3; Red Oak 8, Cameron 0: In Red Oak, the Yellowjackets split their games with the Eagles.
In Cameron's win, the ’Jackets scored three runs in the first inning and once in the second for a 4-0 lead, which they never relinquished.
In Red Oak's win, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a four-run second inning.

Talihina football team not taking things easy against Sallisaw JV

September 18, 2013

Just because the Talihina Golden Tigers are entertaining the Sallisaw Black Diamonds junior varsity at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Doc Robinson Stadium, Talihina coach Kelly Gravitt said his team is not going to back down.
“[Sallisaw] coach [Craig] Benson is going to start his main quarterback for a half,” he said. “We're going to full steam ahead. We're pretty much going to go like a normal week. We had out Tuesday type of practice [on Monday] because we play on Thursday this week. We're wanting to get better every week, and we want to win every one of them.”

Poteau Bandit League teams split four games with Van Buren Green on Saturday

September 18, 2013

It was a bittersweet set of home openers for the Poteau Bandit League teams Saturday at Costner Stadium as the teams split their four games with Van Buren (Ark.) Green.
The sixth-grade team won 32-0, while the third-graders rallied to down Van Buren 14-12.
The fifth-graders were shut out 16-0, while the fourth-graders lost a heartbreaking 13-12 contest.

Good Knight, Trevor; Poteau Pirates make it 2-0, but it wasn't easy

September 18, 2013

I still believe that Trevor Knight was not permitted to full access to the entire playbook of the Oklahoma Sooners. It is almost like the brain trust was saying Blake Bell is who we truly want running our offense.
I think I noticed OU only ran the “Bell Dozer” two times in the game, and it did not look right. The almost unstoppable Bell of yesteryear looked out of sink and, yes, pudgy.
True, he surpassed Sam Bradford's first game passing records, but he missed wide open receivers running free down the middle of the field, and then we did not see Kendell Thompson play in the game.

Tulsa had some good performances on Saturday, but were just overshadowed by OU's outing

September 18, 2013

NORMAN — Blake Bell's first start for the University of Oklahoma overshadowed an outstanding performance by Tulsa running back Trey Watts.
Watts rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown, caught five passes for 65 yards and returned a punt 77 yards.
The Golden Hurricanes were able to find some holes in the OU defense that had only given up seven points in their first two games. Tulsa tallied 20 points on 95 yards rushing and 226 yards passing.
Quarterback Cody Green went 17-for-33 with 226 yards. Wide receiver Jordan James caught six passes for 100 yards to lead Tulsa in the passing game.

Top seeds make it to LCT softball winner's-bracket semifinals; Poteau pitcher perfect against Cameron; Spiro pitcher no-hits Arkoma

September 18, 2013

PANAMA — The seeding held true on opening night of the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
The top four seeds — No. 1 Poteau, No. 2 Pocola, No. 3 Panama and No. 4 Wister — all made it to Tuesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals.
In the winner's-bracket quarterfinals, the Lady Pirates blanked the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets 11-0, the Lady Indians rallied to down the Howe Lady Lions 5-2, the Lady Razorbacks beat the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 9-3 and the Lady Wildcats shut out the Heavener Lady Wolves 4-0.

Senior QB knows offense, defense needs to get better

September 18, 2013

Another game, another win for the Poteau Pirates — another dramatic win at that. Friday night, the Pirates rallied for the second straight week for a victory, this time 43-40 over the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers.
The win was good in the since it gives the team confidence to come from behind.
