Poteau golfer places fifth in OJGT Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY — Poteau golfer Hannah Ward placed fifth in the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tournament, which took place this weekend at Lincoln Park Golf Course. She shot a 75-72—147 to finish three shots behind the winner.
Ward, who is the defending two-time Class 4A state champion, and her brother, Ryan, will compete in a tournament next weekend at Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. Then, the Lady Pirate golfer will return to Lincoln Park Golf Course for the OJGT Tour Tournament the following weekend.

'Johnny Football' is the real deal; Hogs play well, but fall short against Aggies

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — I got the privilege to see last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Saturday night when his Aggies came to Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium to meet the homestanding Arkansas Razorbacks.
Yes, “Johnny Football” did talk a little trash, but he always seems to be able to back it up — kind of like a famous basketball player I've always liked, Larry Bird, who I thought was cocky but could always back it up.

Buccaneer Basketball registration has begun. Registration forms can be picked up at Poteau City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Cost to register is $25 per player and deadline to enter is Oct. 25. Anyone interested in coaching a team needs to contact Billy Bond at (918) 647-1939. The first coaches meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at Poteau City Hall. The draft will be Oct. 23.

Poteau girls lose to Dale; Pryor game rained out

MUSKOGEE — It was a rough Saturday of softball for the Poteau Lady Pirates as they lost 8-0 to the Dale Lady Pirates.
Poteau's second game of the day against Pryor was rained out, and likely will not be rescheduled since the playoffs will begin for Poteau here at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Roland in the Class 4A District Tournament.
Dale erupted for eight runs in the first inning.

Playoffs get hot, heavy now

This week, the postseason parade on the softball and baseball diamonds heats up with regional tournaments for all the non-Poteau softball teams that won district titles last week — Heavener (Class 3A), Panama (Class 2A), Pocola (Class 2A), Wister (Class 2A) and Howe (Class A) — and Wister's baseball team in Class A.

Poteau, Heavener runners compete at OSU Jamboree

STILLWATER — There was an invasion of LeFlore County cross country runners at Oklahoma State University on Saturday as the Poteau and Heavener high school cross country runners competed at the OSU Jamboree.
In the Class 4A-5A girls division, the Lady Pirates were ninth with 283 points, coming in behind team champion Canyon (Texas) Randall (31 points), Awty International of Houston (59), Plainview (68), Deer Creek-Edmond (113), Oklahoma City Heritage Hall (181), Fort Worth (Texas) Southwest Christian (181), Plainview, Texas (192) and Coweta (236).

Wister boys win Class A District Tournament title

WISTER — The Wister Wildcats baseball team saw its streak of trips to state end last spring, but the Wildcats took the first step in starting a new streak Friday afternoon.
The ’Cats defeated the Cameron Yellowjackets 6-0 to win the Class A District Tournament title to advance to next week's regional tournament. Wister (17-13) will find out its regional fate on Monday when the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association announces its regional tournament pairings.
The Yellowjackets end the season at 17-10.

OKC Thunder have high expectations for this season

OKLAHOMA CITY — Last season looked promising for the Oklahoma City Thunder, but an injury to star point guard Russell Westbrook and an inspired Memphis Grizzlies team put a stop to dreams of a championship.

Poteau freshmen, PKMS teams sweep Muldrow

It was a good night of Poteau football Thursday night at Costner Stadium. The Poteau Pirates freshmen posted a 14-6 victory over the Muldrow Bulldogs to end the night of three wins by the locals.
That was preceded by the Pansy Kidd Middle School eighth-graders beating the Bulldogs 22-16.
The tripleheader began with the seventh-grade Raiders posting a 40-6 rout on the ’Dogs.
All three teams will return to action next Thursday against Sallisaw at Costner Stadium. The seventh-grade game will be at 5 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade contest and the freshmen game.

Howe girls stave off elimination twice to down Arkoma to win Class A District Tournament

CAMERON — The Arkoma Lady Mustangs softball team was on the cusp of history, winning its first-ever fast-pitch softball district title. They needed only one win to do it, but the Howe Lady Lions also wanted it and clawed their way to two victories to get it.
Facing elimination all day Thursday in the Class A District Tournament, the Lady Lions had to beat the Lady Mustangs twice to win the district title, and that's exactly what they did, winning by scores of 5-2 and 6-2.
