For those individuals who play or coach high school football, Tuesday, Aug. 7 has been etched in stone in just about everywhere possible â€” from bulletin boards to consciously in the mind.
The 2012 season will get off the ground on Tuesday as high school football teams will be able to begin practicing for the upcoming season.
As high school football players prepare for their first week of practice, which will begin Tuesday, the basic things which will be worked on is, well â€” the basics.
â€śI think the first day or two, we're going to review everything we did in the spring and our camp,â€ť said new Poteau Coach Greg Werner, whose Pirates will have two practices on Tuesday â€” one at 6:30 a.m. and the other at 2:30 p.m. â€śWe're going to try to polish all that up. Around Thursday and Friday, we'll begin to add more stuff. We'll have a lot to put in and things to do.â€ť
The 2012 Choctaw Country Club Church League came to a close on Monday night. The 16-team league ran eight weeks for the local church teams.
For the fourth straight year, the Heavener First Baptist Church team of Brock Hardin, Bobby Pickle and John Summers won the first flight title with a score of 16-under, followed by First Christian Church-Manlove at -12.
In the second flight, the Southside Baptist-Mode team of Paul Mode, Monty Thompson and Billy Newby came in as the best with a score of even, with the Southside Baptist-Peters team being runner-up (+2).
Carl Albert State College Assistant Softball Coach Megan Young will give softball lessons at $25 per hour to girls up through age 18.

Friday Couple Scrambles will take place at 5:30 p.m. every Friday at Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
The entry fee is $15 per person for the nine-hole weekly event.

Darla Renee Trammell, 41, of Lewisville, Texas, formerly of Heavener, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, in Lewisville.Â Darla was born May 1, 1971 in Dumas, Texas, to Joe and Janice (Kiefer) Trammell.Â She was an accountant. She was a graduate of Carl Albert State College in Poteau and Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.Â Darla was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Ada Trammell, Loten and Sarah Kiefer; cousins, Noah Laurent, Mandy and Robyn Simmons, Traci Trammell-Hudson.
Thomas Clifton â€śT.C.â€ť Fortner, 86, of Monroe, died July 28, 2012, in Poteau.Â T.C. was born July 6, 1926, in Monroe to Thomas and Leona â€śLonaâ€ť (Anderson) Fortner.Â He was an insurance adjuster. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara Murphree and Jerry Miller; and two brothers, V.I. and Edward Fortner.Â
Survivors include his wife, Doris Fortner; two sons, Larry and Tommy Fortner; four grandchildren, Amy, Shayne, Jason, Christy; and seven great-grandchildren, Lexxi, Dalton, Dillan, Destiney, Dawson, Tucker and Payton.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Florence King, 83, of Talihina died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Little Rock, Ark. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Talihina Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Fuller officiating. Burial will be in the Old Talihina Cemetery.
Floralla â€śGrannyâ€ť Jean Johnico, 74, of Shady Point died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, in Tulsa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Jesus Name Pentecostal Church in Shady Point with Rev. J.L. Qualls officiating. Burial will be in Royal Oak Cemetery in Poker Bend under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
