Keota Lions take season opener over Arkoma

The Arkoma Mustangs rang up several big strikes at Mustang Field on Friday night, but eventually fell to the visiting Keota Lions 62-38.
Despite several penalties and miscues, Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said, "It's hard to be really displeased. It wasn't like we lost to a bad team.
"They're big, physical and they've got a good running back. They're going to win a lot of games.”

Bokoshe loses season opener to Oaks

After a good-looking first quarter, the wheels fell off for the Bokoshe Tigers in their season opener on the road against the Oaks Warriors.
The Tigers fell to the Oaks Warriors 52-6.

Tulsa Regent Prep spoils Pocola's opener

POCOLA — Last season, the Pocola Indians opened the 2012 season with a one-point road win over Tulsa Regent Prep. That wasn't the case in the 2013 season opener Friday night at John Carter Field.
The visitors from Broken Arrow left town with a 23-20 victory as the Indians (0-1) were their own worst enemy, committing nine turnovers.

Spiro falls to Vian in opener

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs opened the 2013 football season at McClain Stadium on Friday night entertaining one of last year's Class 2A state semifinalists, the Vian Wolverines. Vian proved to be too much, cruising a 32-14 victory.

NORMAN — Just as on Thursday, the Poteau Lady Pirates split their two games in the University of Oklahoma Tournament at Reaves Park. Poteau blanked Berryhill 7-0, but a seventh-inning rally by the Jenks Lady Trojans lifted them to a 6-3 win over the Lady Pirates.
Wister 6, Pocola 0; Wister 2, Buffalo Valley 0; Buffalo Valley 8, Pocola 2: In Wister, it was a good day for the Lady Wildcats.
Both wins for Wister saw outstanding pitching from starter Hunter Gibson, who struck out seven batters and threw a three-hitter against the Lady Indians.

Leflore, Wister boys make championship semifinals at Howe Wood Bat Tournament; Savage pitcher tosses no-hitter; Lions win consolation title Friday night

HOWE — The Leflore Savages and the Wister Wildcats find themselves today two wins away from winning the Howe Wood Bat Tournament after posting opening-round wins Thursday at Lions Field.
The Savages routed the Clayton Bulldogs 13-0, while the Wildcats did likewise to the McCurtain Bulldogs 11-0.
The Savages (9-7) and the ’Cats (9-6) met Saturday afternoon in the championship semifinals, which was followed by the Cameron Yellowjackets and the Smithville Braves in the other semifinal.
The winners played for the title, while the losers met for third place.

NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates split their first two games of the University of Oklahoma Tournament on Thursday at Reaves Park.
The Lady Pirates defeated Wayne 8-6, but lost 3-2 to Westmoore.
Howe 15, Cameron 5: In Howe, the Lady Lions had some late-inning offense to break open a close game.
With the game tied at 1, Howe scored once in the second and third innings for a 3-1 lead, but then added four runs in the fourth inning for a 7-1 advantage.
A single run in the fifth inning and a seven-run sixth inning made it 15-1.

Poteau runner 10th at Owasso CC Ramble; Lady Pirates fourth, Pirates 16th in team standings

OWASSO — Poteau Lady Pirate cross country runner Deven Bond medaled at Thursday's Owasso Cross Country Ramble as she was 10th on the two-mile course with a time of 14:06.
As a team, the Lady Pirates were fourth with 138 points, finishing behind three Class 6A teams — champion Jenks (44 points), host Owasso (67) and Broken Arrow (69).
As for the other Lady Pirates, Haley Griggs was 24th (15:00), Sheridan Hoyer was 28th (15:18), Kaitlan Standridge was 37th (15:37), Kayle Dryer was 41st (16:10), Bayleigh Bates was 46th (16:24) and Iris Ocampo was 67th (17:19).

Poteau Pirates post double OT victory over Durant Lions

In the postgame huddle, second-year Poteau coach Greg Werner breathed a sigh of relief as he talked to his troops after the pulsating 43-42 double-overtime victory by the Pirates over the Durant Lions on Friday night at Costner Stadium.
“I have told you all along that the Durant Lions are much improved over last year, and I believe that they will make the playoffs,” Werner said. “Nevertheless, we played as badly as we could have played in the third quarter, but we played as a team and we came back. I would rather win ugly as to lose pretty.”
