There was a two motor vehicle accident on the Cavanal Scenic Expressway at approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday morning. The accident occurred at the intersection of the expressway and Franzini Street. No injuries were reported, though, one lane of traffic was closed while officials cleared he roadway.
Earl Q. Shipley, former Fort Smith businessman and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Jan. 6, 2012, at his home in Oro Valley, Ariz., with his loving wife of 53 years, Sharon, at his bedside.
SPIRO — This afternoon's fifth-place game match-ups got set on Wednesday in Day 3 of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament at the Spiro Gym.
On the girls' side, Poteau defeated Arkoma 61-45, while Heavener beat Panama 55-44. The Lady Pirates and the Lady Wolves will meet in Friday's first game for the fifth-place plaque at 4 p.m. at the Spiro Gym.
On the boys' side, Cameron defeated Howe 66-59, while Pocola got past Talihina 55-49. The Yellowjackets and the Indians will play for the third time this season to decide fifth place at 5:30 p.m. today at the Spiro Gym.
BOKOSHE — On the last day of action at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse in the 80th LeFlore County Tournament on Wednesday, Thursday's consolation championship games — which took place at the Spiro Gym — got set.
The Pocola Lady Indians and the Wister Lady Wildcats each won their consolation semfinals Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Indians defeated the Leflore Lady Savages 46-32, while the Lady ’Cats edged the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 54-51.
In 1979, I was in Betty Nichols' eighth-grade science class. The LeFlore County Science Fair was coming up, and she asked us if anyone wanted to enter.
I kept thinking all day what I could come up with for an entry. I was walking home on South McKenna that afternoon, and I looked over into the ditch. I saw water running down the side of the hill because it had rained, and the water cut through the red dirt like a knife through hot butter. That showed the scientific property of erosion, and I thought to myself — erosion. I had finally come up with a plan and a project for the science fair.

Donald Eugene Parker, 65, of Heavener died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, in Heavener. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at First Baptist Church, Heavener, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener.
Harold Lee Hansen Sr., 85, of Spiro, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, in Poteau. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Evans Chapel of Memories. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Panama, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
Louis Halcomb, 71, died Jan. 18, 2012 in Booneville, Ark.
Louis was born Oct. 6, 1939, in Spiro to Mason Louis and Mary M. (Atchison) Halcomb. Louis was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jean, and one grandchild, Jeanie Owens. Louis served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1959 and was discharged under honorable conditions.
LeFlore County citizens may soon be able to opt for membership in the largest independently owned and operated air-ambulance company in the United States. At the regular monthly meeting of the LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services Board meeting members heard from Judy Dyke, a regional director of base operations for Air Evac Lifeteam, an air-ambulance company which operates the world's largest fleet of more than 100 medically-equipped helicopters.
A team from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) began a two month project with the U.S. Forest last week. The 10 member team will receive Type 2 Wild Land Firefighter Certification from the U.S. Forest Service and will use the training to assist with numerous precribed burns. In addition to the fire services, the team will work to complete fence removal, trail building and maintenance projects. The team will also return for another two months during the summer, from mid-May through mid-July, to assist with fire and other related tasks.
