School board discusses social media, other issues

The Poteau Board of Education tackled several current social issues at Monday night's meeting.
Members agreed to develop a written policy that clearly acceptable social media behavior for district employees, especially concerning online contact with students.
They also agreed to become part of a research project with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to identify young pupils with autistic tendencies and develop ways to serve those children better.

Brief blast of winter weather causes freezing

A brief blast of winter weather caused slick bridges and overpasses Tuesday morning.
A winter storm that was traveling to the east dropped snow and sleet across LeFlore County creating potentially dangerous conditions for drivers.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers reported slick and hazardous conditions, especially to the south end of the county.
Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing for morning lows and highs around 40 degrees until Friday.

Brenda Lee Reece

Brenda Lee Reece, 64, of Poteau, passed away with her family by her side Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Poteau. Brenda was born Aug. 10, 1948, in Modesto, Calif. to Bill “J.D.” and Lorene (Williams) Gibson. She was a homemaker. Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, and sons Michael Wade and Olen James Reece. Brenda was loved by all who knew her, loved her family more than anything and loved spending time with her husband on the back of his Harley. Ride on Brenda ... Ride on ....

Benjamin Daniel Adams, 56, of Arkoma passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Ben was born Feb. 3, 1956, in Poteau to Woodrow and Leontena (Minor) Adams. He worked in the oilfields. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Lee Adams and James Merl Adams; sisters, Karen Adams and Mary Hurlocker; niece Crystal Dance; and great-niece, Tajia Adams.

Herman Barnes, 85, of Heavener died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Poteau. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery

Bobby Dayton Webb, 78, of Perry, formerly of Glendale community, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Oklahoma City. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery. A second memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 19, at First Baptist Church in Perry.

Jonas Nelson III, 75, of Talihina died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Tulsa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 in the Talihina Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the New Talihina Cemetery.

Danny Joe Fry, 59, of Talihina died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Victory Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Talihina New Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Poteau teams sweep Heavener

HEAVENER — All that matters is leading at the final buzzer. Just ask the Poteau Pirates.
After trailing for the majority of Friday night’s game against the Heavener Wolves, up stepped an unlikely hero for the Pirates.
Junior Jarrett Lowrimore went coast-to-coast for the game-winning layup with two seconds left to give the Pirates a 44-43 victory.
The Lady Pirates gave Poteau a sweep on the night as they handled the Lady Wolves 62-42.
