MULDROW — The Poteau Lady Pirates made this week a perfect one as they picked up a pair of wins in Thursday's three-way, beating host Muldrow 6-1 and blanking Stilwell 9-0.
Pocola 6, Heavener 5: In Heavener, the Lady Indians broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth inning and a single run in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves had a four-run inning of their own in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-4 after five innings, but they got no closer as Pocola scored a big insurance run in the sixth to make it 6-4.

OHP warns of Labor Day crackdown on drivers

OKLAHOMA CITY — Public Safety officials will be participating in a
nationwide campaign this Labor Day weekend in an effort to reduce highway
traffic deaths and injury collisions on Oklahoma highways. "Operation
C.A.R.E." (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) began at 6 p.m. Friday
and runs through midnight Monday.

Spiro lace named endangered artifact

A fragment of lace from Spiro Mounds has been placed on the list of Oklahoma's 10 most endangered artifacts.
The list of endangered items was created by a committee of the Oklahoma Cultural Heritage Trust. The Spiro lace is on of two items on the list placed in the acre of the Sam Noble Museum of natural History at the University of Oklahoma.
The other item is a collection of 1920s era organ player rolls.

Emergency Expo hosts 5K and free screenings

During the upcoming emergency preparedness expo to be held Sept. 21, runners will get a chance to take part in the first 5K run/walk held by organizers.
Participants of all ages are welcome to enter the "Race to Prepare" run that will begin at Carl Albert State College in Poteau. There will be special divisions for military personnel and first responders. Disabled American Veterans will be allowed free entry to participate in the event.
Early registration cost $20 per participant and ends on Sept 13. Registration is $25 the day of the race.

Hunting season is about to start, even for the hunted

Hunting season is just around the corner, and hunters need to be on their toes. Wild animals can be very dangerous.
Earlier this week, a local man was attacked by a deer in the A.B.M. neighborhood, just down the road from our neighborhood. Johnny Baker was attacked by a 220-pound wild Russian hog. He got cut up, and stabbed by those sharp tusks. He told us how fast and strong that hog was, and it all happened so fast.

Pocola welcomes Heavener for final scrimmage tonight

The Pocola Indians football team will get a final shot at fine tuning things when they welcome the Heavener Wolves to town for a 6 p.m. scrimmage tonight at John Carter Field.
The Indians want to improve upon what coach Rick Lang called “stupid football.”

Arkoma has home scrimmage tonight against Gans, Watts

The Arkoma Mustangs football team will get one last preseason tune-up before next week's season opener against Keota when they welcome the Gans Grizzlies and the Watts Engineers for a three-way scrimmage beginning at 6 tonight at Mustang Field.
This week, the Mustangs have been working on the areas in which mistakes were made in last week's scrimmage with Porum.
“It was good to have something on film to show them,” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “Hopefully, we can get those mistakes corrected [tonight's scrimmage].”

Talihina football team to scrimmage Vian, Roland tonight

The Talihina Golden Tigers football team wants to use a major test to get ready for next Friday night's season opener against Wilburton, and coach Kelly Gravitt got his wish.
The Golden Tigers will scrimmage the Vian Wolverines and the Roland Rangers in a three-way beginning at 6:30 tonight at Doc Robinson Stadium.
“I want to see how we do against bigger schools to get ready for our home opener,” Gravitt said. “We want to look sharper on offense, and we want to see our guys playing new positions on defense getting more familiar with getting their defensive reads.”

Panama gets final preseason tonight in three-way scrimmage at Sallisaw-Central with Canadian

The Panama Razorbacks football team will get one last chance to fine tune things before Thursday night's season opener at Gore tonight when they travel to meet host Sallisaw-Central and Canadian in a three-way scrimmage.
