Poteau Pirates in District 4A-4 showdown Friday night at Fort Gibson

October 10, 2013

Last week, the Poteau Pirates coaching staff was watching game film of perhaps the last big game the Pirates have been in — their dramatic 15-14 win over Wagoner in 2009 at Costner Stadium with the winning points scoring on a fake extra-point try which was turned into a two-point conversion run.
However, tonight is quite likely the biggest football game for Poteau since that night as the sixth-ranked Pirates (5-0, 2-0 in District 4A-4) travel to meet the Fort Gibson Tigers (4-1, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Spiro Bulldogs entertain Eufaula Ironheads Friday night

October 10, 2013

The Spiro Bulldogs were a bit leery going into Idabel last week, based on the fact that two years ago they struggled and left town with a loss.
That didn't happen last week as the ’Dogs handled the Warriors 46-21.
“We did OK,” Spiro coach Chris Bunch said. “We started off sluggish. I don't know if it was the bus ride down, but we started kind of tired. But we ended up pretty good.”
Now, the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 in District 3A-8) will look to win for the fifth straight time this season when they entertain the Eufaula Ironheads (2-3, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at McClain Stadium.

Bokoshe seeks first win of 2013, travels to face Boulevard Christian

October 10, 2013

The Bokoshe Tigers football team appeared that it was going to have an open date this week. Earlier this year, the Tigers' Week 6 opponent, Eagle Point Academy, dropped them.
However, the Tigers (0-5) found an opponent, the Boulevard Christian Patriots (0-3). The two teams both seeking their first wins of the season will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hatbox Sports Complex in Muskogee.

The dedication will take place in conjunction with the second annual Leflore Alumni basketball game at 7 p.m. Oct. 26. Baseball, bow season and the youth season

October 10, 2013

Bow season is in full swing now and I have actually got to sit in a stand a couple of times. However, all I have seen so far is a big ol' coon and a coyote. The good thing is that I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the woods and the wildlife that I got to see.

The Wister Wildcats baseball team had a good Class A Regional Tournament last Thursday and Friday at Stokes Field in Byng, even though they fell a little short of the state tournament. The first game was against the No. 1 team in the state, Byng.

Heavener looks to keep momentum going off Roland overtime victory; Wolves travel to face undefeated Checotah Wildcats on Friday night

October 10, 2013

If ever the Heavener Wolves football team was in need of a win, it came Friday night as the Wolves won their home opener in dramatic fashion, beating the Roland Rangers 20-14 in overtime last Friday night at Harvey Stadium.
“It was huge,” Heavener coach Carl Lee said. “It was huge from the standpoint that as much youth as we've got for them to be able to come out on top, they now feel that they can overcome anything.”
In fact, Lee uses the word, “hurdle,” to describe it.

Pocola looks to end losing streak Friday against Wilburton Diggers

October 10, 2013

Things have been rough the last two weeks for the Pocola Indians football team, losing 59-0 to Vian and last week 59-14 at home to Hugo. However, injuries have had a big part of that.
“We're about 90 percent we'll get two of our kids back — Anthony Clopton and Hayden Hindmarsh,” Pocola coach Rick Lang said. “With them back on offense and defense, that will make us better. [Quarterback] Johnny [Satterfield] is about 80 percent, but he's got to give it a go. It's a must win for us. Our season is on the line. We have to take them one game at a time, but we've got to make it happen this week.”

Talihina returns to district play with showdown against Sallisaw-Central

October 10, 2013

The Talihina Golden Tigers football team got out of Saturday night's game against the McAlester junior varsity what it needed to, since there was a possibility of an open date when the original opponent, Union Christian, Ark., dropped out. In the end, the Golden Tigers prevailed 41-13 and found out some of their strengths and weaknesses.
