Spiro girls pull off second straight upset in as many days, knock off No. 2 Hodgen

MONROE — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs, who are seeded 10th in the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, are quickly becoming the Cinderellas this season's annual event.
For the second straight day, the Lady Bulldogs pulled off an upset. After knocking off No. 7 Bokoshe on Monday afternoon at the Monroe gym, they returned to the same site and did likewise in posting a 33-29 victory over second-seeded Hodgen in the championship quarterfinals.
The three other games here were boys quarterfinals, and the two top-seeded teams posted wins.

Poteau wrestlers pin losses on Talihina, FS Southside

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team resumed dual action Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse as they handled both the Talihina Golden Tigers (60-12) and Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside (57-24).
Southside won the middle dual, 42-18 over Talihina.
The Pirates will return to action with a road dual against Tahlequah beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Poteau’s Tyler Tustin was third at 138 pounds in this past weekend’s Cushing Tournament.

City OKs election dates, recycling plans

The Poteau City Council moved a step closer Monday to establishing a regional recycling recycling center here.
They also approved a resolution calling for city elections in April.
Members agreed to present three options on a building in the industrial park to the Choctaw Nation, which announced plans last month to open a hub for several collection sites already operating in the county. The options include lease, lease-purchase or purchase of the building.
Candidate filing period for the April 2 election will be Feb. 4-6.

Mary Louise (Camboni) Barnes

Mary Louise Barnes, 67, of Panama died Jan. 2, 2013, in Panama. No service will be held at this time. Grace Manor Funeral Home, Poteau, is handling arrangements.

Melba Robbins Clunn

January 9, 2013

Melba Robbins Clunn, 77, of Wagoner died Jan. 4, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ada Robbins, and husband, Jim W. Clunn.
She is survived by children, Randall and Terri Clunn of Sapulpa, Michael Clunn of Sardis, Jimmie and Vicki Clunn of Wagoner, and Ramona Buckner of Poteau; one brother, Eugene Robbins; two aunts, Christine Jordan and Jean Clunn; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sardis Community Center, Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, and are being handled by Clayton Funeral Home.

Alice Faye Weaver

Alice Faye Weaver, 68, of Poteau died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, in Poteau. Alice was born Nov. 12, 1944, in Monroe to James Calvin and Dovie Melvina (Faulkenberry) McKenzie. She was a homemaker. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, James; and nephew, Shawn Kersh.

Mourine (Plumlee) Gentry

Mourine (Plumlee) Gentry, 82, was born Jan. 19, 1930, at Meeker to J.E. and Callie Plumlee. Mourine began her eternal life on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. She had eight brothers and one sister. She attended first grade in a one-room schoolhouse at Union Point then attended second grade at Musson School near Shawnee. From third to eighth grade, Mourine attended Ferguson County School. She graduated from Butner High School in 1948.

James Newton Smith

James Newton Smith, 77, of Pocola died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Private family services will be held at a later date under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Glenda M. Sisson

Glenda M. Sisson, 69, of Poteau died Jan. 6, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born April 1, 1943, in Thackerville to O.C. and Mildred (Scivally) Sampson. She was a foster parent, homemaker and loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Robert W. Sisson; three brothers, Virgil Sampson, V.J. Sampson and James Sampson; a brother-in-law, Chance West; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Langston; and parents-in-law, Robert and Margie Sisson

Launa Belle Turner

Launa Belle Turner of Poteau died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Bokoshe to Jacob Louis and Ola Belle (Peerson) Cloud. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and devoted Jehovah’s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle Gene Turner; two sons, Danny Gene Turner and Timothy Wesley Turner; two brothers; a sister; and a great-grandson.
