October 2, 2013

It's been a while since the phrase, “a big game” has been uttered in Panama other than against archrival Pocola. That phrase is being said this week.
The Razorbacks (3-1, 1-0 in District 2A-6) will entertain the Hartshorne Miners (3-1, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at George Ollie Stadium.
“It's big,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “We've been telling the kids all week that this will be the biggest game they've ever played in. We've stressed that all week.”

Answering questions about grand slams, triple crowns

October 2, 2013

In my last column I talked about grand slams. You can have a grand slam in baseball, bridge, tennis and golf.
I also talked about triple crowns and you can have a triple crown in baseball and horse racing.
Editor's note: Due to not receiving all the Poteau Bandit League games' information by press time, the story with their games Saturday at Greenwood, Ark., is not in today's edition. As soon as all the information is received, the story will be published.

'Johnny Football' is the real deal; Hogs play well, but fall short against Aggies

October 1, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — I got the privilege to see last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Saturday night when his Aggies came to Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium to meet the homestanding Arkansas Razorbacks.
Yes, “Johnny Football” did talk a little trash, but he always seems to be able to back it up — kind of like a famous basketball player I've always liked, Larry Bird, who I thought was cocky but could always back it up.
