Finally, opening night is here for the Poteau Pirates football team, which will begin the 2013 season at 7:30 tonight against the Durant Lions at Costner Stadium.
“If you're a football player or a coach, you're always excited about game No. 1,” Poteau second-year coach Greg Werner said. “A lot of work goes into game No. 1. It's time to start playing games. You're tired of practicing, and looking at each other. It's time to start looking at somebody else.”

Pocola football coach Rick Lang could not be happier with how his team is entering tonight's 2013 season opener against Tulsa Regent Prep at 7:30 p.m. at John Carter Field.
A pair of rich traditional football powers will meet tonight when the Vian Wolverines travel to meet the Spiro Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. at McClain Stadium.
Last year, the Wolverines handled the ’Dogs, but Spiro coach Chris Bunch hopes his team is better prepared tonight.
“They're still good,” he said. “Hopefully, we're better. I didn't think we were ready to play them last year. We just didn't get prepared for them. I think that was the difference last year. I think if we're prepared for them, and get lined up in the right spots, things will be better for us than they were last year.”
Who knew when the Pocola Lady Indians and the Poteau Lady Pirates played last week it could very well be a prelude to this month's LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. If the seeding holds true, that will end up happening on Sept. 19.
The Lady Pirates were named the top seed of this fall's county tournament, with the Lady Indians being second, at Wednesday's seeding meeting at Western Sizzlin'
The Lady Pirates blanked the Lady Indians 2-0 last week.
The Talihina Golden Tigers are primed to get the 2013 season off and going when they entertain the Wilburton Diggers at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Doc Robinson Stadium.
“Every week, we're getting better,” Talihina coach Kelly Gravitt said. “I feel pretty good about where we're at. We had a real good scrimmage [last Friday night] against Vian and Roland. They were good teams, and I was very pleased with how we did against those two teams. As long as we don't regress, we should be a good football team.”
After some struggling seasons, there seems to be some renewed enthusiasm for Bokoshe Tigers football.
The season for the Tigers will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday as they hit the road to face the Oaks Warriors.
“I can tell they're ready to play,” first-year Bokoshe coach Bryan Murray said. “They're wanting to go hit someone else. I can't see them not being up for this. They've really worked hard in the off-season and in practice. They're ready to prove to people that they're better. We're looking forward to Friday night.”

Although the Poteau Pirates football team won its final game of the 2012 season, the win did not come in the playoffs. It came in the season finale over Tulsa Rogers in Week 10 at Costner Stadium.
Thus, the Pirates have had Sept. 6, 2013, etched in their minds ever since — the date of this year's season opener against the Durant Lions at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Costner Stadium. Senior wide receiver Jarrett Lowrimore is no exception.
“We've been anticipating this night ever since we got in here in the spring and on through practice,” he said. “We can't wait. We're super excited.”
